I’m frankly not that surprised. The city and especially the surrounding areas in LI have always had some of the most conservative and fascist populations in the country. There’s something uniquely dangerous about the thin blue line Italian American crowd.

Gotta say though I’m not sure if this covers surgical masks but more ski masks, which are also not uncommon to see.

Idk if they actually manage to drive into any recognizable area of the Moscow metro area it will be a serious PR disaster, not just to westerners but to wealthy Muscovites who make up significant blocs of support and haven’t had to think about tangible violence. It’s a global city above the fray of war, and has a history of not being taken in advances, so I think the biggest thing is how uncertain anything could go depending how far they get.

  • Sadly this is not a good thing for a number of reasons.

Flaco is predominantly eating rats which is not his species’ main diet and is not providing him with nutritional diversity.

While Central Park doesn’t use rat poison, its use is unrestricted in all surrounding neighborhoods and rats can have territorial ranges in the hundreds of meters. Rats tainted with poison are slower and more vulnerable to predation.

The last owl in Central Park (which was killed in a collision with the truck mind you), was found to have near lethal levels of rodenticide in its system and would likely not have lasted very long before the accident. And this does not touch on the non-mortal effects of the poison on their well-being leading up to it.

Flaco is 13 years old; in its natural environment his species can live to 20 years. It is likely he will not last for more than a year at this rate.

Aside from all that, Flaco is non-native and larger than native predators. If he does end up becoming a more proficient hunter there is a significant risk he will disrupt what few native bird populations that remain in the park. It’s not a responsible precedent if we hope to rebuild and preserve extant biodiversity and establish that mindset in the general public.

I know I’m a buzzkill here, and the zoo is in a tight spot with what will be a PR mess regardless of what they do now that it’s viral. But the best thing for Flaco would be to catch him and bring him to a wildlife refuge somewhere away from a prey monoculture full of poison.

  • I think you can say there’s no difference between democrats and republicans but I realize dems probably don’t show up because when they do it means actually doing something even if it’s feckless and small. So they can’t even risk doing that and kneecap themselves.

Republicans don’t have that shame, they can have the photo op, say there’s an announcement coming in 2 weeks to fix this whole mess, and go on about their business killing everyone while newsmax puts out that “this wouldn’t have happened if the woke mob didn’t need vinyl chloride to make everyone trans” or whatever they’d come up with.

Yeah I always hear the same thing. Know lots of former rat folk and they eventually have to stop with their hearts too broken.

  • I don’t think anyone is saying the western techbro idiots couldn’t do it - and a lot of them weren’t trying. Alt protein in the US is pretty different. But the FDA/USDA rules are really restrictive/slow for approval, the rancher lobbies you mentioned are strong, and there’s just not a command economy like in China so it’s much more difficult to gain momentum on a market basis.

That said yeah, I feel like the pork produced for $3 is either super subsidized or would never be able to get approval in the US food safety-wise, and I’m not confident that would be a bad thing knowing what would need to go into it. For instance, if the growth media has antibiotics in it, you’d basically be microdosing penecilin in every bite.
