Been getting into it the last few month of quarantine, it's pretty awesome, though I'm still pretty bad. Would love to play with some fellow chapos if anyone's interested
I watched Hikaru No Go when I was younger. It did not prepare me as much as I thought it did.
I go through cycles where I'm like "ok it's time to get really into Go," I play a lot and lose all the time since I still don't know what I'm doing, and then stop for months.
I was doing that on and off for a while, then recently decided to invest some time into learning a little bit about strategy and tactics, doing shitloads of "life or death" puzzles, learning some opening theory and playing a bunch of 9x9 games. I still get my ass kicked most of the time when I play online, but I'm finally starting to win games against similarly-ranked players, so it feels like progress, haha. Sensei's library is a good resource for learning stuff, and blacktoplay is good for puzzles (they get harder as you get better, which is cool).
Yeah, Go is great, I was thinking of asking this myself earlier. I've made it to around 1-5 kyu and been to a couple tournaments/congresses pre-Covid. I feel like my biggest obstacle to improvement right now is my headspace or mindset that I approach a game with, I go on winning streaks where I'm like "how do I ever lose at this rank" and then I go on losing streaks where I'm basically Patrick from Spongebob nailing a plank to his head.
Also if you feel like you suck, don't worry because literally every rank feels that way.
