Most of the USA other than outer-ring suburbs, wealthy enclaves, and gentrified downtowns already looks worse than what Americans picture in their heads what the USSR and Eastern Bloc looked like under communism. And even in the outer-ring suburbs, I'd argue all the big box stores, billboards, massive parking lots etc all are pretty damn depressing to be in themselves.
I live in a shitty little rural town and at least half of the population is on meth opiates or crack. Our buildings aren't falling apart, well other than the factories that were abandoned for China, but the populace is a great example of how shitty American conditions are.
Especially considering there's hundreds of similar rural towns in basically the same situation just in my state alone.
Sounds like where I'm at. There are far too many houses in our little city that appear to be falling apart with siding that is falling off or has been obviously peeling for the last decade or more.
