In Communist China, internet content that criticizes the state is blocked from public view.

You can literally search the exact name of the video and the channel name and you won't find it, that's wild.

Haven't even looked yet but I'm guessing the views are waaay lower.

Youtube can mark videos as 'controversial' or something and they basically don't show up unless you go looking for them. They don't show up in recommended videos or anything like that.

There's a video by the channel Empire Files, called "Trump is expanding the empire", it doesn't show up even if you search the title word for word. You find mirrors of the video on other channels before you find the actual video.

Here it is btw, it's a fantastic video that's definitely worth watching, it's almost certainly the best criticism of Trump that I've seen. And here's the sequel which might be even better.

But yeah, try searching "Empire Files Trump is Expanding the US Empire" and see what happens.

Imagine if the internet was this corporatized and censored back around 2003-2008. In that 5 year span, we would've never got all the stories about Abu Ghraib or anything else regarding war crimes and what was going on Iraq and Afghanistan. Those journalists would've been deemed traitors and terrorists.

I expect in Biden's presidency, there is going to be even more crackdown on internet censorship. It's coming after net neutrality was axed too. Trump and his people were more concerned about enriching themselves to really care about this stuff. But Biden and Harris are the types of authoritarians who will push for more censorship and giving corporations more power.

Think of how quickly the Afghanistan Papers disappeared down the memory hole.

Big tech companies are tax exempt and fall outside the laws, which is how they have censorship power to begin with.

The GOP made it clear before this election that they would be gunning for Big Tech and wanting to break those companies up if they keep the senate. If they do this, and can frame it as they are trying to protect free speech and privacy rights of the everyman, it's going to look bad on Dems whom all those CEOs donate money to and support. The GOP will be able to frame it that they're going after Big Tech and punishing those companies while Dems just sit there and do nothing, allowing them to write the narrative.

intimidating civilians in an attempt to control the dissemination of info about your organizations activities because such information is detrimental to public perception and implementation of your political aims or, to put it another way, being a terrorist, and the assorted three letter agencies of amerikkka; name a more iconic duo

Indeed. But how do you avoid just creating a splinter group of a splinter group?

They have a stranglehold over the well travelled commons. We need to take that, not try to replicate it, honestly; but the architecture of the internet has made that quite difficult indeed from a technical perspective

Stories like this make me dread and be scared of being a leftist. The power that the intelligence and other related agencies is incredible and intimidating in every way.

It's all private. This type of content causes problems for the bottom line way before surveillance or intelligence gets involved, imho.
