I've got an urgent report to make.

Well yeah, and browsing the regular Web from TOR exposes exit nodes and is generally regarded as a Dick Move (though not quite on the order of running torrent clients though it).

I was more being a jackass and implying that there's no TOR route-hopping involved here in the first place.

TOR was almost 100% funded by the Navy, State Department, and a CIA-front called the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

FOIA requests have yet to prove the developers put a backdoor in to TOR. However, they did prove that TOR alerts the federal government about security holes before alerting the public.

I would not trust TOR. I assume there is a backdoor or something that we have not discovered yet. The State Department would be insane to release a tool for anonymous internet usage without one.

For a dissident Iranian, TOR + a VPN is fine. The State Department is not sharing that information with the Iran. I doubt the VPN would even be needed. But any person under the Five Eyes should not use TOR.

Then use fucking what lol, literally everything is compromised one way or the other if you stretch it too far. I'm not hiding from the CIA I just wanna pirate shit and bypass stupid firewalls. Like maybe if I was Fidel Castro they'd put all their resources into identifying me through TOR or whatever the fuck, but alas, I am not.

What part of my post makes you think I'm talking about you?

There is a massive push to get political dissidents to use TOR. People need to understand that it is not any safer.

If you are not doing political work, this does not concern you. If you are, understand you are (probably) being surveilled on TOR.

Idk, you said that no one under 5 eyes should be using it, which sounds pretty absolute. Even if you are doing political work, what kind of political work are you doing that's gonna get the CIA jumping through hoops in TOR to surveil you? Idk, it just sounds pretty hyperbolic.

There is a documented history of feds in the US and UK hiring agents to infiltrate completely harmless left-leaning spaces - bookclubs, mutual aid projects, etc - with the infiltration lasting years. Requesting information from intelligence-aligned internet client is not "jumping through hoops."

You realize that they don't have to come busting through your TOR or whatever to do that right? It's the easiest, cheapest and most efficient thing. And way more practical than just getting some rando's IP.

I am not trying to say TOR is completely safe or whatever. It definitely isn't but for the purposes of 99.9% of people, it is, especially if you combine it with something else.

Yes, I've said that several times in this thread lol

This thread is about political dissidents using TOR. I said, "hey that's actually not helpful." That's it.

The early internet was is 100% funded by DARPA.

People talk about TOR as if it's any different. That's the only point I'm making.
