    First gun at all? .22 rifle, Ruger 10/22. First handgun? Don't get anything smaller than a compact, tiny handguns are difficult to hit things with, probably a 9mm

      All my up votes for the 10/22 as a first rifle - your gun isn't shit if you don't practice. Perfect practice rifle.

      9mm for carry - better to have a fat clip than some 6 shooter 44. Again, learn to use it - join a range. Practice drawing at home and whstever you practice, practice RIGHT. Build muscle memory
