The scanners look for signals from RFID tags (radio-frequency identification). If the tag hasn't been deactivated at the till, the scanners will go off when the tagged item goes through. RFID tags are cheap so most packaged products will have them. Stuff that doesn't come in a package won't have the tag.
If you want to avoid the scanners, you want stuff that isn't tagged. Bulk section is a good bet, since it's just the plastic bag and the goods. Try to figure out what stuff will and won't set the scanners off.
Not just RFID. Some tags are the even cheaper magnetostriction ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAm7qAKAXwI
Wow I wondered what those fucking things were
Noted.... noted.
Neat, didn't know there was another method. Principle is largely the same for shoplifting purposes. Tag = you get busted.
Except you can disable the magnetostrictive tags with a neodymium magnet
Nice. Good tip.
