Think I posted this here before, but we used to go in pairs. One would take stuff, the other wouldn’t. We’d go through the gates at the same time, as far from each other as possible. If the alarm went off, the one who didn’t take anything would stop, act startled, throw up their hands. The other would keep walking like nothing happened. Security would always instinctively go after the one that had nothing.

The scanners look for signals from RFID tags (radio-frequency identification). If the tag hasn't been deactivated at the till, the scanners will go off when the tagged item goes through. RFID tags are cheap so most packaged products will have them. Stuff that doesn't come in a package won't have the tag.

If you want to avoid the scanners, you want stuff that isn't tagged. Bulk section is a good bet, since it's just the plastic bag and the goods. Try to figure out what stuff will and won't set the scanners off.

There are all kinds of tips but one of best things to do is have a friend who can run distraction. A girl friend of mine would start raising shit near the exit as the person who was actually taking stuff was getting ready to leave, shit got results.

If you can somehow aquire a still active tag you can put it in your phone case/wallet/etc. and when you walk in it'll go off, you just tell them "I'm not sure...I think it's my phone?" Then when you leave and beep there won't be any questions.

You can buy a magnet that will remove magnetic tags online. For the strips that might be on DVDs, games, makeup, skincare etc you should be able to wrap them in foil or use a foil-lined bag. Might be outdated tho.

If you do everything right the alarm might still go off. They can set it off manually if you are seen taking stuff. In this case say you're in a rush and quickly show that your bags aren't setting it off, maybe say it must've been someone else, and just leave.

I don't have any advice on this topic, but just for everyone's information, if you do get caught shoplifting and have any tools like that in your possession, you may be looking at additional charges. Google something like "possession of thieves tools / burglary tools" for more info.

I saw the most genius thing when I worked retail. Some dude kept stealing DVDs, and it turns out he hid the tools to do so underneath the shelf. I assume this is why; couldn't be posessing the tools if he just leaves them in the store where he needs them.

literally removing them is the best way, but also difficult if there is decent Loss Prevention.

try to go for things that don't have tags, remove them, or literally just walk out and don't stop.

also some big box stores have a garden center which don't always have the same type of security, so that could be an option (during the day, they usually close at night).

Those little magnetic tags are usually on the outside of the package somewhere and you can just surreptitiously peel them off and the alarms won’t go off. Hypothetically. In minecraft

Just look authoritative, maybe wear a suit. If anyone asks, just say "corporate needs to examine this". The only people there who knows who's in corporate are the higher store managers, so most won't ask any more questions.

I heard that you can tell if the scanners are even on if you use bluetooth headphones. When you walk through them, the music sounds weird/quieter. This happens when I go through scanners on my campus' library (which are always on), so I feel this could help you know if they're even on at all since I've heard some stores don't even turn them on. I've also heard most won't even go off if it's something under a certain price. I don't know if any of that is true, but maybe look into that more.
