Post this on Reddit, but only mention later that this is in Hong Kong
Should note I'm pretty sure these are incredibly illegally subdivided but yeah it's a terrible travesty of what happens when private real estate runs amok and the city refuses to fund basic services. Especially since HK has over 100 abandoned villages (the city is only like 30 percent of the territory).
The smallest legal apartments are like 120 square feet, still way too small especially with multiple people (I lived in a 98 square foot dorm room for a year once, never again. Minimum apartment size for one person should be close to 300 at the smallest), and are found in major Chinese cities like Shanghai in addition to Hong Kong (and these still get illegally subdivided, but not quite as bad I think).
I think as Shenzhen starts to overtake HK as the main center of economic gravity for that region, many ordinary young people will emigrate there for work and more affordable housing.
Until HK gets fully integrated into the rest of China, the plutocrats will remain plutocrats and juice the housing market because it's too big to fail.
I saw a short doc about this a while ago. There was a western guy trying to live in one of these for a day and he tapped out during the night because it waa infested with rats or cockroaches or something.
It's in French unfortunately. He throws in the towel around the 12 minute mark and you can tell how disgusting it is. https://youtu.be/1uJvBiPDbiY
Edit to add: He talks about bugs, evidence of mice. He goes back the next day and everyone is still there. He talks to a guy from mainland China who moved there to work in construction but he is unemployed and it's the only place he can afford - around 200 EUR. It's more expensive above him because there's a window.
The response will be "this wouldn't be happening if there was DEMOCRACY".
When you point out that almost all democratic countries also have hideous housing crises in major cities, they'll say "at least we can talk about it" and then call you a 50 cent CCP bot.
Back when HK was a "democracy" (aka a colony of the UK) they had the walled city which was the inspiration for the dystopian city in Blade Runner.
In commie land people are forced into boring grey apartments.
