Referred to Hbomb and Shaun. like yes sure quality over quantity, but if i dont like the topic of the video, that is it from that youtuber for another 4 months. making a video every week or so would make them way more enjoyable without losing so much entertainment value, and way more influencial, which is why Hasan and Kyle Kulinski are just so popular.
edit: ok i think some of yall are getting unnecessarily heated in the comments. i just wanted to say that not everyone is able to watch a really long video, and there is a trend within left yt to make very long videos. i know some of them are capable of making shorter, possibly more frequent content, and i liked it more that way. not to mention that yt doesnt favor long video and crap like that, so if they are trying to reach out/make a profit, this isnt how you do it usually.
well, dont do these videos. you can make shorter videos about briefer topics. if your job is to educate, sure, but you could have educated a lot more without going so far in, or educating in easier topics. if they keep going like this, left yt will be like a long lost friend you only see once every couple of years and has little influence over you or anybody; meanwhile, any right winger can shit out a video or more a day, and bring over thousands to his side.
you're in the minority, lol. i guess they have a market for those, but there are simply not a lot of people who can sit down and watch a two hours video about a topic they may not care about. i for one adore Hbomb. his video on Loss is my favourite on yt. but i dont give a shit about Fallout, since i never played it. so i'm gonna have to wait this summer for a new Hbomb video.
you’re in the minority
Is he? Really? Because Shaun seems pretty goddamn popular and he's only ever done that kind of video.
I mean, if you don't like Hbomb videos, don't wait for them?
i said i do like them tho? but it's a bit disappointing when a new vid comes out and it's about something i dont care about. the problem wouldnt be there if he did more frequent vids, cos yeah sure, i didnt like this one but i got a new one soon.
if you watch streamers a lot you might have noticed a lot of them have gone in a craze for pokemon cards lately? but i dont care, they upload a video daily so they can really just do 5 videos in a row about that, and after that i'd still get normal content. ofc i dont expect hbomb to do daily videos, tho, lol
You don't like them though. You would like them if you did like them, but you don't like them, so you don't. If they were more like videos you liked and less like videos you didn't, you'd like them, but the videos he makes are more like the ones you don't like and less like the ones you do.
shut up, nerd, i know what i like, and i know what i would enjoy more. stop coming around here telling me that criticism of something i like makes me not like that thing. "hm what? you cant enjoy someone's content cos you can focus for more than five minutes straight? that clearly means you cant like that person or their content or their humor. owned" shut up.
(sorry im having a bad day and i really dont need people telling me i dont have taste for having attention disorders.)
I mean, if you can't focus on something for more than 5 minutes, saying someone who's thing is making 2 hour long videos should make 5 minute long videos isn't even really a criticism of them.
It's not a criticism of Coke to say that I'd like it better if it were clear and lemon&lime flavored.
I mean, I have attention disorders too, but my way of coping with long videos is to watch them in small bursts (pause and come back later) or to simply not watch them. I see a long Shaun video and I’m like “oh cool, a new completely free video that this person has made available to me and others completely for free! How nice of him to do so! He probably spent a very long time on this. Perhaps it will be more difficult for me to watch this one, but that’s ok because he literally does not owe me anything”
You don’t have to be on his Patreon to watch his videos. They’re on youtube
I segment of his audience that has free access to his work but decides to give him money voluntarily as a token of appreciation.
Dude, fuck off. He is just an entertainer. If you think this is some important battle that needs to be done, do it yourself. He will do whatever he wants.
dude, dont be so angry. im just saying, that making videos that long goes unappreciated. that's it. i wouldnt want my favourite guys on the platform go unappreciated like that.
If they keep making them it's because it's appreciated. If youtube doesn't like it, Patreon will do.
eyyy this is the first time I’ve seen Jacob Geller mentioned here, that dude makes some GREAT videos
Who’s Afraid of Modern Art is possibly my favorite video essay, ever
First video of his I ever saw, and it actually made me rethink a lot of what I had previously believed about modern art.
i dont remember why but i disliked some of jacob geller's political views (fault of my unconscious antisemitism? lol)
I’ve watched pretty much all his videos and I think it’s impossible to say his political views with any more specificity than “some kind of leftist.” He never goes very deep into politics, it’s just not the scope of his channel
I’ve watched that one, but it was a long time ago and I don’t remember it well. If he said something more political in that one, it’s not something I committed to long-term memory.
The solution to this is simple - subscribe to 365 left youtubers so you have something to watch every day.
Some Left Leaning Guy Puts out Video about History or Something that’s over Half and Hour
Boooooooo! Too long nerd I hate you and will attribute things Vaush did to you!
For middle aged dudes in Milwaukee make 2 hour video where they get drunk and watch VHSs
OMG BASED!!!
I referring to Red Letter Media obviously.
They put out more content but they’re also like a team of 6 people with an actual studio.
Three people with some help thrown in. Most of the guests are just guests. Jack and Josh have done some work behind the scenes but nothing permanent.
True, probably does also help most of their stuff is just improved segments where they talk about movies and stuff.
Not saying it isn't work, but it requires less pre-production research and what not, hence why they can put out pretty consistent content.
For sure. In the ancient days before even Half in the Bag where Plinkett reviews were the only real output and videos would come out about as often as HBomb's now.
Most of the work for what they do is editing which Mike and Jay seem to really enjoy doing anyway and have training and experience that most YouTubers don't which I'm sure speeds it up a lot.
Agreed on the improv stuff too. Scripts and stuff take a long fucking time.
Oh I love there videos, but people always complain about how long YT videos seem to be getting but RLMs been breaking the hour mark for a few years now and nobody seemed to give a fuck back then.
(i lied, i dont watch rlm, i just heard they are cool) i would suppose it's becuase it's in podcast format. you can listen to them in your off time, or while doing something else. the shaun and hbomb video take your full attention.
The video component is pretty important to their content so you do have to pay some attention to it.
It's mostly just cuz it's chill dudes dragging bad movies, and not like, hour long discussions on game design.
There is room for both imo. It's hard to find a really good idea for a video, and the long form stuff is interesting and entertaining even for general audiences. The daily content is good too for the algorithm and building a consistent following.
this is a normal youtube rule, the people who take a long time to make content, always end up having less subs and views than the people who dont
I’m just happy that there are cool people out there who put time and effort into content that I can watch for free
Damn yo, they're human beings and they take time to make shit, at least afford them the right to choose how they do it and on what subject.
Would it be cool if they made videos more frequently? Absolutely. But the way you've complained about it here just sounds really entitled and whiny.
They like making long video essays that take a while to put together because they like making long video essays that take a while to put together. Wishing that they would change their MO simply to cast a wider net and/or make more money just sounds like a really, idk, corporate thing to say?
It's really hard to write decent scripts at that rate. I mean some people can do it, but for the most part you either get shitty formula stuff or have to hire a writing team ie Colbert.
