These things are so rad! Some really cool photos in local history books of how these things would keep the tracks usable in my little mining town area. No rail here anymore, all converted to bike/multi-use trails. The old Northern Pacific, Hiawatha, and Milwaukee lines. Steep, and winding, and traversing mountain passes. Trains are so fucking cool. Way better than an endless stream of diesel semis tearing the shit out of the interstate. All lined up for miles chaining up everytime there's a bit of snow. What a dumb fucking idea that was. The US was really bad at planning a country.
