I've seen a couple of "zero waste" youtubers do reviews of electric cars and both have mentioned that there are areas local to them where the cost of re-charging electric vehicles is free.

Am I alone in being annoyed at this? I mean, great that cities are subsidizing a more "eco-friendly" alternative to diesel/gas cars, but maybe the better solution is investing in public transport? In one case, the youtuber in question lives in San Antonio and has complained multiple times about how shit the buses are, but apparently the city offers free charging for those rich enough to buy electric vehicles?

Sorry if this isn't the right community for this.

it'll only be free until they have enough market share to charge for it

you're absolutely right, but at the same time it seems like it's making people who wouldn't otherwise be attracted to EVs, and setting up charging stations is ridiculously cheap; you just buy one, plug it in to high voltage, and boom maintain it like once a year. also propaganda

It's likely just an early adopter thing. Once enough people drive electric they'll charge (get it). Imagine having a gas station but with none of the pesky fuel transport and storage headaches. Of course once electric cars are common enough gas stations will suddenly jump on the charge station bandwagon. Then part of the allure will be luxury electric charge stations where you're not subject to something as pedestrian as watching people fuel their cars.

You're right but EVs are pretty shit in general and only as green as the electricity source, which is usually fossil fuels based.

Based on consumption alone (e.g. ignoring production costs), it was only a couple of years ago that driving an electric car produced fewer emissions than a modern petrol car in Victoria, Australia.
