90s: What is the best game to come out of the 90s?

00s: What is the best game to come out of the 00s?

10s: What is the best game to come out of the 10s?

We have finally entered a different paradigm. This part of the series will be primarily focusing on genres. So far I have [RTS, Turn based RPG, Action RPG, Board Game, Arcade Game, third person shooter, MMO, Action, Civ Clone (yell at me if this isn't the right name for the genre), 2D Platformer, 3D Platformer, Roguelike, Dungeon Crawler, Card Game, Point and click, Indie, Text dungeon, Stealth, Rhythm, horror, Metroidvania, Survival, Sandbox, Adventure, Simulation, Puzzle, Bullet Hell, Racing, Tower Defense, Sports, Idle, Trivia, and Casual] as available genres. Let me know if I missed something, and I will try to get it added.

I finally decided to give these threads a tag. It might be easier for people to search for in the future. I also expect to bring this over to the other comms in the near future.

This is eventually all going to get compiled into one megathread for people who want gaming recommendations from Chapos specifically. Other consoles and genres will come in sporadic subsequent threads. Please contribute to previous threads if you missed them. This is meant to be an exhaustive list.

Expanding on your choice(s) is definitely a plus. Not everyone knows about or has played non-mainstream titles.

Half-Life 2 is still the greatest game to ever grace this Earth. Pure bliss.

Original Quake. It's the reason why modern gaming exists as it does.

Without Q1 there'd be no Team Fortress, Half-Life, Valve/Steam, etc...

In terms of cultural impact alone, it has to be the Halo series. 20 years ago now they revolutionized the fps genre. Their controller layout became the standard across all consoles. Their 2 weapon max carry limit, actual plot, wide open spaces, and community support were huge steps forward for the genre as well. Halo 2 was one of the first games to take advantage of Xbox live, and it really pioneered the console matchmaking scene. Not to mention that halo 2 was the best-selling entertainment OF ALL TIME. IT MADE MORE MONEY THAN TITANIC JAMES CAMERON WAS IN SHAMBLES.

I want to play Doom eternal so bad, but my computer freaked out on me and I can't play games with those kind of specs anymore. 2016 is literally unplayable for me despite previously being able to run it at decent specs.

What happened with your computer? Did you try a fresh driver install? That normally fixes my issues.

It seized up on me, and I had to send it in. I could never get it to play right again after it came back, reinstalled Windows and everything. Eventually, I'm going to put out for a 1080 to see if that fixes it.

Superhot is probably the most fun of any singleplayer fps I've played

Halo 1 and 2 are my favorite shooters ever. AI and gameplay FAR beyond anything else at the time including Half-Life 2 which IMO is overrated. That's not even considering the multiplayer.

Wolfenstein: The New Order deserves a mention as well for putting single player shooters back on the map. Incredible game not afraid to push the envelope.

I second Halo 1, it has a certain sandboxy element to it rather than the more linear style most other shooters have. I still enjoy replaying it after 20 years. Halo 1 pc and Ce are pretty much free now, too, and Ce has modding support.

Played thru halo 1 and 2 on legendary in the master chief collection a few months ago and it was just as fun if not more fun than the first time in the 2000s. Amazing games to this day fun all the way through.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is so unapologetically antifascist, the teenage edgelords are seething to this day. Holy shit this game made racists mad.

It's also just a good game all around. The story, dialogue, characters are phenomenal from start to finish, the gameplay is highly enjoyable (I did get frustrated with the level design every once in a while, but I still enjoyed the hell out of stealth and dual-wielding).

Favorite cut-scenes: Grace & Fergus foul-mouthed shouting match, Milkshake Nazi, Super Spesh being weird about aliens. Honorable mention: Horton being a literal commie.

My popular opinion is Team Fortress 2 (for multiplayer. if we're talking singeplayer yeah probably hl2). I find most of the shooters more in the vein of Call of Duty & Battlefield to be all kinda samey. I like Halo a lot, but the slow movement combined with the slow time to kill force me to agonizingly wait until I die after making a tiny mistake, or to just lose a battle rifle aim duel with little feedback on what's happening, which ends up making me very frustrated. TF2, despite its age, bloat, and frequently shit community, has a very solid core gameplay using hit-or-miss weapons and almost every time I die I actually understand why it happened (even if it was just wrong place at the wrong time). I highly recommend Lazypurple's video on the subject if you want more elaboration. If you are interested in the game but are put off by the valve matchmaking servers you should try the creators.tf servers or youtuber Uncle Dane's 'Danetopia' servers, that get rid of the random elements of TF2 and don't seem to have nazis in them (if you have more server recommendations please drop them!).

The actual reason why I like TF2 is because I can beat people to death with a sign that has the shut the fuck up terf meme on it.

TF2. Good call. I always somehow forget it when thinking of shooters even though I've probably put more time into than anything else.

Dark forces really broke a lot of ground for the genre and will always have a special place in my heart. Quake is another super important early one, so many games owe their existence to it. As far modern tec goes my vote goes to Borderlands 2. It's funny, good looking, and most importantly the combat never gets old.

Probably Half-Life 2 or Halo 3 for me. Granted, Half-Life 1 and Halo 1 and 2 are incredible as well. Very much game changing.

I suppose there should be two categories here, campaign and multiplayer. My answers would be similar though if you consider CS an extension of half life.

Online would have been a good choice to split this up, unfortunately it's too late now. Do you think any of the other genres need to be split up while I have your attention?

I think it's kind of two parts of one conversation, so not splitting it up is cool.

RPGs are an interesting one since the subcategories can be fairly different (turn-based, action, MMO). I feel like it still makes sense to do it all in one thread though.
