For decades, scientists have talked about so-called “committed warming” or the increase in future temperature based on past carbon dioxide emissions that stay in the atmosphere for well over a century. It’s like the distance a speeding car travels after the brakes are applied.
But Monday’s study in the journal Nature Climate Change calculates that a bit differently and now figures the carbon pollution already put in the air will push global temperatures to about 2.3 degrees Celsius (4.1 degrees Fahrenheit) of warming since pre-industrial times.
Previous estimates, including those accepted by international science panels, were about a degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) less than that amount of committed warming.
But it’s not game over because, while that amount of warming may be inevitable, it can be delayed for centuries if the world quickly stops emitting extra greenhouse gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, the study’s authors say.

Cute
Edit: Let me give you a concrete example of why I think this is insanely naive, even if a country seemingly wants to do something they always will try to find compromises with those companies running the coal plants. Take Germany, they wanted to phase out coal power plants and what did they do, the government(obv. part of that government were our SocDems) reached a compromise with energy companies which basically comes down to paying billions of Euros to them so that they can power these plants down early by 2038. Yes, you read correctly, 2038.
We are fucked.
This was essentially my response too. I was going to ask, is it helpful that all these climate predictions end with a glimmer of hope? “It’s still not too late. Warming can be reversed if we immediately cease all automobile transportation and electricity production globally.” How about the articles instead end with ideas for how our lifestyles are going to have to change given the changing climate?
I think you are making a very good point there.
At this stage, where it is very clear that we will face global climate disaster because capitalism is inherently incapable of solving this problem and a global socialist revolution is pure fantasy, it would probably be better to change the narrative more towards climate realism.
Fortress Europe is already reality, we are letting people drown in the mediterranean and nobody bats an eye anymore.
I'll copy-paste something I commented before, just to illustrate how far this process has already progressed:
It is fairly rare to even get a glimpse at this nowadays, because Europe does everything it can to keep this thing dark, like trying to prosecute civilian rescue efforts or grounding civilian airplanes trying to spot from the skies.
Another thing Europe now loves to do is to just outsource it to the other side of the Mediterranean like to the failed state of Libya, great partners of the EU in keeping those pesky migrants out of Europe. That they are held like slaves in Libya, if they don't die at sea or in the desert, doesn't concern us very much already.
Or how about Greece recently taking refugees out of camps, putting them on some rafts and abandoning them at sea?
How about the articles instead end with ideas for how our lifestyles are going to have to change given the changing climate?

Doesn't Germany also burn especially "dirty" coal?
Edit: Lignite was what i was looking for, and apparently due to it's low efficiency, it produces far more CO2 than normal coal
Yep, Germany is still the biggest producer of this worldwide, there are to this day whole villages being uprooted just so that this shit can be dug up.
I don't understand how anyone could know this and not immediately radicalize towards the left or right
By genuinely believing Elon Musk will have moved us all to Mars or invented a carbon succ machine by then
why do they have blind faith that countries would pay to succ enough carbon when they won't even give people healthcare
they couldn't even lockdown and ban travellers for like two weeks kek
climate catastrophe WILL happen
Is already happening in many places and will only get worse
Fuck we really need an nsfw-style doomer post tag I'm gonna go post hentai of my OC to try to cheer myself up now
That’s the scary truth. When our lives are directly and immediately threatened we can’t even get a majority of Americans to support decisive action. We’ll never get the political will to deal with climate change.
They still think most problems are technical rather than political in nature
I fear the real ghouls just don't care. The global north will be in an even stronger position as food production shifts to higher latitudes
whoever came up with that idea clearly watched that futurama episode too many times
scientists and urban planners
lol they're not science, eat shit /c/urbanplanning
Well it was nice knowing everyone. In 1000 years folks are gonna find an Ipod with that song about ocean front property in Arizona and use it as scientific evidence that California was a fish-people citystate back in the ago times of the 2010s.
Lib expert talking about climate change be like
-
Climate change could be a possible problem in the future
-
Climate change might become a possibility
-
We can prevent climate change by littering less
-
We can stop climate change by conservation
-
We can delay climate change by saving energy
-
We can mitigate climate change by reducing carbon output <--- you are here
-
We can handle climate catastrophe by blocking off refugees
-
We can ride through climate collapse by destroying lesser countries and ransacking their resources
-
We can survive biosphere death by culling the undesirables off our population
-
We can go to space leaving behind the slaves we used to build our arkships
-
unscientific
liberalism relies on gaslighting and telling you that what you can see with your own eyes isn't real 👁️
liberalism this and liberalism that. the collapse sub is a cesspool or hysteria from all shades of liberalism. they thoroughly reject engagement in scientific arguments nothing of their discourse is grounded in science either. i dont understand what you're aiming at
Fuck it's like a student who's been given months to complete an assignment and didn't do any of it because he thought it wasn't important and now wants to force the rest of the class to accept an extension.
Every time I read one of these articles about whatever new warming milestone or whatever it always, without fail, includes some variation on the phrase "faster than expected".
Meanwhile, every attempt at mitigation is taking longer than anticipated.
The only real hope you can have for global warming at this point is that some unforeseen future technology/scientific advancement will save our asses.
My conclusion to the climate news is usually to want to start a garden and learn more about how I can live off the land. For example, we can. Ring back rain to dry regions by planting forests of trees. China is doing it successfully. Some day we might have the collective motivation to reclaim our environment and we will need the knowledge of where to start.
