I come from Eastern Europe and one of the prices of admission for entering the EU is doing something about discrimination against Romani, Muslims, and other minority groups. The joke was that to get into the EU you had to stop acting like France.

Oh and spoiler: those countries that did become EU members still have de facto Romani ghettos. Almost like the whole thing is just a PR stunt for the EU and the only real concerns are whether they had were an economic cost benefit analysis.

Oh for sure a PR stunt. Can’t think of one EU country that doesn’t have — at the very least — severe antiziganism. Fuck all of Europe honestly. Even the “better” countries are so horrible.

Thanks for the new word, also:

Antiziganism is hostility, prejudice, discrimination or racism which is specifically directed at Romani people. Non-Romani itinerant groups in Europe such as the Yenish, Irish and Scottish Travellers are often given the misnomer "gypsy" and confused with the Romani people.

Ok that explains so much. I keep seeing "gypsies" portrayed in western media and found it so bizarre that it's always white people playing them. I guess it's a part of this confusion, rather than typical Hollywood white washing.

sometimes the characters are meant to be Romani still but can excuse it cause “there’s no Romani actours” or whathave you. There was this one show Hemlock Grove I think where the character was Romani but was a white guy who spoke the language in like 4 different dialects lol.
