I love that all their imperialism is forgiven because they have the tiniest bit of recent labour militancy.

France: kills Romani/Black/Muslim ppl constantly, colonizes africa

most american leftists: but at least they protest... 🥺

like 2/3s those protestors would literally spit on a Roma woman on the streets on their way back from those protests most likely

I come from Eastern Europe and one of the prices of admission for entering the EU is doing something about discrimination against Romani, Muslims, and other minority groups. The joke was that to get into the EU you had to stop acting like France.

Oh and spoiler: those countries that did become EU members still have de facto Romani ghettos. Almost like the whole thing is just a PR stunt for the EU and the only real concerns are whether they had were an economic cost benefit analysis.

Oh for sure a PR stunt. Can’t think of one EU country that doesn’t have — at the very least — severe antiziganism. Fuck all of Europe honestly. Even the “better” countries are so horrible.

Thanks for the new word, also:

Antiziganism is hostility, prejudice, discrimination or racism which is specifically directed at Romani people. Non-Romani itinerant groups in Europe such as the Yenish, Irish and Scottish Travellers are often given the misnomer "gypsy" and confused with the Romani people.

Ok that explains so much. I keep seeing "gypsies" portrayed in western media and found it so bizarre that it's always white people playing them. I guess it's a part of this confusion, rather than typical Hollywood white washing.

sometimes the characters are meant to be Romani still but can excuse it cause “there’s no Romani actours” or whathave you. There was this one show Hemlock Grove I think where the character was Romani but was a white guy who spoke the language in like 4 different dialects lol.

Wow it's almost as if not 100% of the population of a country agrees with their shitty government... and with each other...

Your last statement is like saying "2/3s of the BLM protesters would literally waterboard arabs on their way back most likely". No they would not.

I have had many interactions with European leftists. Genuine leftists who know theory. They tend to still hold A LOT of antiziganist beliefs. Romani people are one of the worst treated groups in the world. That is no way related to BLM protestors, nor would I say such a thing. I have a hard time trusting European leftists for such reasons. Do you live in France? Europe? Interact with Roma on any normal basis? Know anything about Europe’s casual racism towards us?

I understand where you’re coming from, but American leftists DO have the tendency to ... romanticize (for lack of better word) French protestors specifically. That’s all.

Without disclosing too much, let's say at least that I lived in France for many years (and thanks god, I'm not American). To be fair I do not know any Romani people personally - yet I've heard countless racist remarks against them. I get you, antiziganism there is maaaaaassive (even in some leftists circles).

But I still think it's very harsh - no, it's a gross caricature - to say that a majority of French protesters just hate you. "Romanticizing" French protestors would be a mistake - that I agree with you - but going the opposite extreme and just calling them a bunch of racists does not help either.

                lol i feel that.

2/3s maybe wouldn’t spit on a Roma woman, but I do still believe 2/3s at least would say racist things against us. But again, I get what you’re saying. A comment I make hyperbolically criticizing the protestors doesn’t negate what they do and have done and their fight in their battle. Just a warning for unaware Americans to be careful who they idealize.

Taking out Poland (which is admittedly reactionary) but not actual imperialist nations like France or Belgium is kinda lib shit, tbh.

Also, why are India, Brazil, Hungary, Australia, or Mexico (save Chiapas) still there?

If you measure imperialism by income credit per capita (a reasonable measure Michael Roberts used, with the reasonaing that advanced firms/countries draw wealth from subaltern countries) you find that the worst, most egregious imperialist countries are:

    • Sweden
    • USA
    • UK
    • France
    • Germany
    • Canada
    • Japan
    • Australia
    • Hungary
    • Spain
    • Italy
    • South Korea

(Also note that since Lenin wrote Imperialism, these are basically all the same countries he would have railed against - with an exception for Korea because it was occupied by Japan at the time)

Another way of determining Core/Periphery could be that Peripheral countries tend to trade mainly overseas whereas Core countries freely trade with each other, i.e. a ratio between trade with neighbouring countries/trade overall is probably a good measure of if a country is exploited or not (the lower the worse off).

I mean, the land is fucking gorgeous, it's the culture and government (and consequently too many of the people) who suck.
