That's a big part of why children and especially babies basically do not exist in Ayn Rand fantasies. There's some (ableist slur) children in The Fountainhead that are guilty of the crime of existing in a sacred rich asshole building without pulling their weight, but that's it. porky-scared

God that's disgusting. And even if I were to be as entirely self-serving and utilitarian as this person, we need our ecosystem as stable as possible for our own survival. Do these people think we live in a vacuum?

Do these people think we live in a vacuum?

They believe in a version of the Happiness Monster that requires all the happiness in exchange for more happiness trickling down later, so the Happiness Monsters promise. It's why a core belief of "Effective Altruists" is that climate collapse and environmental decay are irrelevant because they are looking billions of years into the future, where all those billions of years ahead require in the present is that billionaires get even richer, faster, so they can ostensibly build the robot god. lord-bezos-amused

I deeply despise people who flippantly dismiss entire swathes of existence for the sole reason they can’t profit off it. Imagine thinking plant pollination as a concept is best addressed by allowing the destruction of nature and having the tech industry engineer a solution that can be parceled off and sold after deciding it wasn’t profitable enough to prevent the pollinators going extinct.

I have seen the same argument against planting trees too , that tree planting is not profitable and hence it is not a good way to combat global warming ! I mean ....

no see we have to financialise forests via carbon tax credits as industrial offsets. this is good for the environment.

Carbon offset through tree planting is an objective good given the facts of modern existence, any opposing it should become a carbon offset by entering a pit. Just saying.

I hate yellowjackets because they are little demons that try to sting you.

You hate yellowjackets because they are unprofitable.

    We are not the same.

We can resolve this contradiction by setting up a fund to pay for the training of yellow jackets to mercilessly sting reactionaries.

I felt so bad recently. Had to destroy some near my side door because delivery people were starting to put stuff there for ???? reasons. They also were starting to fly into the garage and get stuck and mad.

Like guys can't you go colonize a log or maybe the flower pot I put upside down explicitly for bumble bees.

Honestly, people in general need to be sat down and told that bugs are important towards a functioning world. The bumblebees, spiders, and potato bugs serve a vital role in the ecosystem of you having literally anything other than shit made of metal or plastic. Sorry, I tend to soapbox on this kinda stuff.

I used to be a psychotic little Randian, trying to make sense of Objectivism's ridiculous contradictions, until I realized I couldn't square the circle of why people should have kids.

Babies have absolutely no value in a purely individualistic profit-seeking world. Why would anybody have a kid if they can't even send it to work in the uranium mines for 5 whole years?

In other words, I realized that if everybody acted the way Ayn Rand wanted them to, that would be the last generation of a species that chooses to extinguish itself.

Which is why children are as absent as the Working Class in all her books.

No wonder so many Randroids openly hate children and have power fantasies of living forever.

Once again a comment I made on my bit account gets stated plainly without the irony, I think it’s impossible to do a good bit on Reddit or Lemmy because any ghoulish take you can think of ironically is something that some amount of users believe completely. Absurd.

No, it’s not. I made a similar comment about how I always carry a flyswatter with to take care of any useless stingers I see at some point, but it was meant to be obviously a joke. I think the person in the screenshot is being serious.

Talk to Silicon Valley computer touchers enough and sooner or later they'll tell you that "meatspace" is so full of "inefficiencies" such as endangered species that should just die already in favor of more e-products taking their place. very-intelligent

Color doesn't have a commercial value

Some colours are actually trademarked. The exact shade of grey used on Amazon delivery vehicles is trademarked exclusively to them.
