Columbus Day was lobbied for by the Knights of Columbus so that Catholics would have a holiday as well as Italian-Americans.

You don't get to piss and moan because you picked a horrible person as your symbol of national heritage. That ones on-a you.

i am former catholic and HOLY SHIT IF THAT IS THE BEST YOU GUYS GOT I WOULD HAVE BEEN SO PISSED, like francis of assisi, the saint, was A REAL ITALIAN MAN (in the same sense that columbus is which mean not that italian as itally is not a thing yet, but it counts) and he slaps, he is the coolest fucking thing, i studied at frasciscan school so i know a lot about him and he would be such a better holiday like

He was a rich dude, went to war as you do in italy in the 12th century, went to prison, got sick, started to question if his life, got back home, tried to live normaly, went to another war, mid trip came back home because he had a vision and stops living that luxury life, he goes to rome on a pilgrimage as a beggar and has another vision that is jesus say telling him "Francis, go and repair My house which, as you can see, is falling into ruins." and decides to restore this empty ruined chapel he is praying at, as you do after seeing visions, i am gonna skip things but he steals things from his father shop, sells stuff and tries to give this money, goes to the and the priest ddon't this crime money so he has to run from his father, stay in a cave for a month, live as a beggar and goes back home, his father beats the shit out of him puts him in a small room locked, his mother releases him he starts to live as a penitent asking for rocks to fix the church by himself, he would carry these rocks and put them by himself and restored it over time, he then went around and fixed other churches, and then started taking care of lepers build a house by himself and founded a religious order HE RULES this is the shit every catholic loves, that jesus insanity of going and helping people to such an extent

My point being Saint francis day would have been such a better pick

you can play on the american dream maybe go for a Francis is a Self-made man after leaving his house with nothing, he eventually builds himself a house, near his job that now he has, he then convinces a lot of people and founds what is the equivalent of a company in the 12th century, a religious order, and he was so good at this that he convinced the sultan of egypt to allow him to preach and visit all the holy sites and open a franchise in the holy land that is there since 1217 to today also you are loobying give them money who cares, we are getting a holyday here

It's really shit. I can think of like 20 Catholics that were influential to the Americas that are better choices.

Bartolomé de las Casas for instance. Went to the new Spanish colonies, realised what was happening to the native population, and hit the fucking roof. Literally excommunicated the entire populace and refused the opportunity for reconciliation while they kept slaves.

Plus it's not that hard to find a better one. Hell, here's an Italian Catholic person worth celebrating: Mother Cabrini.

      • First US citizen to be canonized
      • Built a bunch of schools and hospitals
      • Italian immigrant
      • spent her life helping the poor and sick all across the world.

A completely painless switch, just have Lief Ericson day on the Friday before the get the "exploration" part down and we're good: problem solved.
