I really believe it works! Once I realized what I was doing, I realized that when embarrassing things happen, my immediate response is to think, "This is going to be HILARIOUS when I tell people about it later!" And I really think it robs the bad moment of its power. Like, I actually get excited about the dumb shit that I do because I know it's going to be a great story. Tell it a few times, it gets less funny as the immediacy goes away, and POOF! it's forgotten.
I just wrote a damn manifesto about this as a reply to this post. I honestly think it helps, though my only evidence is me, so idk.
