If you're trying to contact trace or work with relevant information, Total Cases gives you nothing pertinent. I see where you're coming from, though. They should still have the option to look for Total Cases.
Short-term, yeah, I can see how it feels deceptive. But people seeing a different regional graph than they're used to and being challenged to read label axes is probably better for the long-term.
But if there's a grand conspiracy to whitewash Covid because Biden has assumed the presidency, I think we'll have a better handle on testing that with headlines. Although, to his credit, Biden's administration at least has a vaccine rollout plan, so also consider that as we see the numbers change over the coming months.
