White collar high-income professionals living vicariously through worthless public figures. To acknowledge those people are useless is existentially threatening.

EDIT: I'd also say a lot of these people probably work bullshit jobs that create little to no real value for society, they know it deep down, and thus achieve a sense of self-worth in a hollow capitalist society by closely identifying with these people. They don't want to admit that all the debt and hard work it took to get those prestigious credentials and pay grades were fucking worthless in the end.

being a PMC liberal with a worthless job is having Imposter-syndrome but it's real, you're actually a bloodsucking imposter

"our leaders are capable, and have our best interests at heart" is a comforting notion, it just doesn't hold up to the slightest scrutiny

This isn't even quite that though. I think part of what's so gross is that it isn't really even about the leaders, and it's definitely not directed at them. It's them telling you to shut up, but gaslighting you instead of just saying "shut up."

They want desperately to not have to think or care about politics anymore. They'll grasp at anything to rationalize that to themselves, to the point of telling other people that being politically engaged when the Democrats are in power is bad, actually.

Celebrity worship, except the celebs are politicians.
