"And I grew up around science in a way that was taught to me by someone who was so profoundly passionate about a gift which is the gift that scientists give to us in that their whole reason for being is to see why can be unburdened by what has been," the 56-year-old first woman vice president said.

what the fuck???

Their whole reason for being is to pursue what is possible for the sake of improving human life and condition, Harris said.

why is she like this lmao

"It is such a noble pursuit. And the importance of NIH is that this is about an essential function of government. Which is to provide for public health. The work that happens here has one goal: to improve public health. And the importance of the pursuit of the work that happens at NIH is it's not about profit. It's about the people,"'

the NIH are capitalists, they always go mask off with their consideration of patients as "consumers": THE NEOLIBERAL TURN IN AMERICAN HEALTH CARE https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26460446/

I know what you do. I know that you work around the clock with those experiments that have to be checked on every few hours and they don't care about what time it is on the clock.

Frankenstein baby crying at night doesn't' care what time it is!

I know the work you do and the collaboration that is required. I know the work that you do reviewing grants. Because of course some of the most significant scientific research has been publicly funded. That's what my mother did, she reviewed grants.

blind item: all competitive grant peer reviewers are bastards.

they are significantly less important to the facilitation of good science than the poor bastard who has to deal with throwing out sharps, but they are gods in the political economy of american science. the only one i ever met and had the displeasure of having a meal with was one of the most personally repugnant and snobbish pricks i have ever met in academia. 100% the kind of guy who treats service workers like invisible scum but never misses an opportunity to talk about his adventures on his sailboat.

This. We like to laud top researchers for their achievements but all the top PI's I know are incredibly abusive to their postdocs and below. Y'know the ones doing the actual research. And oftentimes they'll find foreign postdocs and academic researchers just so they can yank the chain of deportation to make them work harder.
