What is it about Sonic as a franchise that you get things like this or Shadow the Hedgehog?

I'm trying to imagine if Nintendo treated the Mario property like this, like if Wario had a sawed-off shotgun and shot cops

My guess is cerberus syndrome for the comics. It was inevitable in the 80s to 90s for some reason.

Sonic was also always a the rude dude with attitude mascot of the 90s, he was defined completely by the pop cultural milieu which meant he was going to become a hardcore troubled edgy hedgehog fighting the man because that's what happened to lots of pop culture in the 80s and 90s. Mario didnt face the same pressure, different country, wasnt as defined by pop culture. And then after the 90s that was just an entrenched part of what Sonic was. Sounds like they were trying to break away from it with some of the recent games but edgy Sonic and Shadow will always be a lurking part of the franchise it can never completely excise. They should just embrace it at this point instead of being self-consciously embarrassed, some of the best sonic media was that cartoon where him and a few other animals were rebels in a cyberpunk future. Either that or stick to 2d platformers where you gotta go fast and ignore any attempts at a plot or dialogue beyond save the trapped animals and blow up robotnik at the end of the stage.

It's simple, Sega and the Sonic franchise don't play by your daddy's rules.

Sonic started out as the edgy alternative to Mario, and he had to keep that cred even after 9/11 turned American culture into a nihilistic sludge

The Archie sonic comics are fucking brutal man.

There’s the 2 page spread of robotnic just overlooking his actual war crimes and saying something like “yeah, not a bad day”

Sonic Forces is basically the plot of Wolfenstein: The New Order but in the Sonic universe and at one point Knuckles asks for a "sitrep" and then says "Of course it's terrible, it's war" which is pretty tight.
