And it's his choice: How much to deal with moderate Republicans who support a package that would lower benefits substantially and anger progressive Democrats? Or, to look at it another way, how much to stick with much of his original plan and risk a bloody partisan brawl for the next few years?

What the actual fuck ?! don't the dems have control of both houses of congress on top of the white house ? who gives a flying fuck about a "partisan brawl" under these conditions ? just pass stuff and ignore the shouting.

They're doing it through budget reconciliation, yes! I don't even get the point of this article! Biden already said "2009 was a mistake" for negotiating with Republicans just for them to say no anyway!

Also, Republicans being the protagonists of the news, there's no mention that the Republicans do not actually have a counter offer. Their bill has no state/local funding and limits checks to sub-40k. That's not a real offer. That's bartering for a watch and offering the Easter Bunny.

She's trying to set the limits of political discourse between Clinton and Reagan. Borger is a propagandist doing the work for Third Way.

the prophecy has become true; it was foretold by anyone with a brain that the democrats would turn into the "anyone but maga" party as soon as trump won the R nomination. Ronald reagan, GWB, literally anyone besides trump is now acceptable at worst

I hate this woman with the energy of thousand dying suns.

"Ronald Reagan always had a lot of bipartisan support," says a Biden adviser. "It just wasn't in the Congress."

It may turn out to be too cute, but there's clearly an evolving definition of unity in the Biden White House. Same for bipartisan. In Bidenworld, bipartisan unity isn't just a Capitol Hill exercise. It's about convincing the public that Biden is right. Unifying the country, outside of Washington, a la Reagan.

Ronald Reagan, the nation's 40th president, became one of the nation's most revered public figures in recent years, a distinct turnabout from the more routinely average ratings he received while he served in office between 1981 and 1989.

Reagan wasn't bi-partisan, he was Trump 1.0 - a celebrity that was popular politically because the humiliated his opponents. This ahistorical deification of Reagan is pure brain rot, but not unsurprising from one of the most vapid political commenters on CNN. Maybe she sees a little of her own smooth-brainedness in the senile Reagan and instinctually empathizes.
