I feel like using the week that the inauguration took place is not a good baseline (I get that this is prime time hours but there were events and coverage all through these hours). Plus the Capitol riot took place just a few weeks prior, which surely resulted in a spike in viewership that was still regressing back to normal during this time frame.
One thing to take away here is that Maddow has a more committed audience than most.
Looking at year over year data for Jan it seems like CNN is doing okay, but this Jan had an insurrection and inauguration so that has to be skewing it you're right. Still I wouldn't be surprised that without the outrage machine that is Trump the msm will see a slump.
I'm convinced that's why I'm seeing so much Marjorie Taylor Greene coverage. Existentially, they have to create a new monster.
