    The threat is said to be existential. It fuels secessionism. Gnaws at national unity. Abets Islamism. Attacks France’s intellectual and cultural heritage.

      Yeah,

      Since the yellow vest protests Macron's taken a hard turn to the right.

      At this point the French government is pretty much full fash with "islamists" as their internal enemy.

      If i'm not mistaken in france there's a distinction between muslim/islam and specifically Islamism (or "radical islamism"), which is defined I think as wanting to have an islamic society, sharia law, etc.. and in that sense is described as completely opposed to the notion of a secular republic.

      Not defending this, since it's pretty clearly vague and seems to be mostly a kind of boogeyman, but yea.
