It keeps happening to me and returning to the page does not work very well and often returns me to the 1st page of 'Active'.
I DMed all the mods this question last night and they all responded with the same message.
"Oh yeah, great idea! We did it 5 minutes after you messaged the first mod about it. Check it out with this link."
None of them opened in a new tab. I checked.
i would also prefer this. it's hard to see the difference between the embedded image icon and the external link icon over the thumbnail sometimes and titles aren't a reliable way to tell if something is going to expand in-line or open a new website.
there's tool tip text but we shouldn't have to wait for that to decide we did a long enough mouse-over. There's the status bar, but i'm sure a lot of people roll without their browser showing it and it's horrible ux to have to look between the top left-ish and the bottom of the screen for that information.
idk about other browsers, but in firefox middle-click does that by default
ctrl-m1 should do the same thing, even though that's more awkward to hit.
Depending on the laptop, a two or three finger tap on the trackpad may function as a middle click
