    Since you're not familiar with the context (which is great, btw, it means we're growing organically now), I'll explain:

    Back in like November 2018 when the subreddit reached 69,420 subscribers, the mods decided it would be funny to shut down the subreddit temporarily (to preserve the 69,420 subscriber count). I myself was brand-new to the sub, and was rather bemused to find it shut down.

    After it was brought back, a user made a post entitled "Closing the sub for a joke wasn't OK," which was upvoted fairly heavily but was also instantly converted into a copypasta, and it's been a popular in-joke ever since.

        Nah, John McCain died when we reached 42,069. The mods shut down the sub for all of an hour or two, then decided to reopen and delay the shutdown to 69,420 so we could celebrate.
