          They also have better vision than you'd think because their photoreceptor cells can go rapidly in and out of focus in tandem with their head movements to cobble together a much finer picture of the world than you'd think the equipment they have on hand would give them. They're such amazing little critters.

      As someone else mentioned they're simple eyes that can only discern light and dark, called ocelli. In flying insects they seem to be largely used for navigation, using the sun overhead as a marker to find their direction.
