I don't think the US troops were ever there officially. It started with special forces types slitting throats of Syrian children for fun, and then it suddenly became tanks, the people who support said tanks, and a whole logistical apparatus with a comically oversized hose tapped into Syrian oil wells with a big "To USA" label on the side
