Isabel Ivanescu is a research assistant on the Syria portfolio at the Institute for the Study of War. Her work focuses on al Qaeda's network in Syria and intra-opposition dynamics in greater Idlib. She graduated from Duke University in 2020 with a BA in Political Science: Security, Peace, and Conflict. She is a graduate of ISW's Hertog War Studies Program.

Isabel has been an active participant in Roeper’s Model United Nations program where she received the Best Delegate Award in 11th grade at the Great Lakes MUN and this year at the same event won an Honorable Mention. This year, at the North American Invitational Model United Nations in Washington D.C. she received a Verbal Commendation. Last year she received second place in the State Forensics Tournament. Isabel, has most recently taken on a Senior Project to provide a home for homeless people in Detroit through houseDetroit where she explains “… I have a consistent record of pulling off, nay, dominating, the undertakings I start. It’s not my story that matters, though, it’s those of the people houseDetroit will be helping. People who have been knocked down by a troubled economy, a difficult past, an unfair system, or a personal tragedy.” Her work was recently featured in a Huffington Post article.
