— You feel cold. There's a presence at your back. Something monstrous is standing behind you. It's here to kill you. It reaches out a claw to grasp your heart, to stop it - and misses.
[Medium: Success] — The notebook in Light's hand - there's something written there. It's a name, the name he knows you by. But it's not your name. Not the one you call yourself. Not the one stitched into the waistband of your soul. He tried to use your name for something, but it was the wrong one. You see it in his eyes: glee turning sour, victory clouding over with confusion. What was supposed to happen just now?
— KILL HIM! BREAK HIS HANDS! NOW! DO IT NOW!
— Whatever it was, we survived. He can't hurt us.
— [Challenging: Success] A roll of the dead. Names and faces, cause of death. The coroner's report for tomorrow, written today.
— His book... kills people?
— [Legendary: Success] That's impossible, and yet... the pieces are fitting together. The timings. The things the killer could have known. If the weapon was this, if all you needed was a name, even this kid could... The longer you think about it, the more certain you become. What you felt just now was real. But it also means you got lucky. If he thinks his cover is blown, he could do anything - kill anyone. Everyone around you. You have moments to act, and you have to do it with absolute subtlety. He can't suspect a thing.
— [Challenging: Failure] Your eyes bulge in their sockets. Your hand jerks up, accusing finger shooting out like a misfired bullet. The words jumble and clog in your throat, wrestling to get past each other.
— "K-KIRA! Light is Kira! The book!"
Original ending
[Impossible: Success] The moment is frozen. He knows you know. Have you just killed everyone? A shot rings out from behind you. Light clutches at his wrist, blood spilling through his fingers. The notebook has fallen, spun away under a desk. He screams - obscenities mixed with lunatic ravings, how he'll become "God of this world", that these idiots don't understand. He dives for the desk but two officers grab his arms and restrain him. He's frothing at the mouth. You've found your perp. You turn. Kim is standing there, gun smoking, looking almost as surprised as you.
— ...You sounded so sure.
[Impossible: Success] The moment is frozen. He knows you know. Have you just killed everyone?
The silence is broken by a triplet of running footsteps, a rustle of cloth. Seemingly in slow motion, Lieutenant Kitsuragi sails past at chest height. His tackle catches Light full-on, driving the air from his lungs. You glimpse his expression of wide-eyed shock, mirroring your own of just moments ago, as he topples under the weight of the law. His notebook spins into the air, pages fluttering, a bird set free.
On the ground, Light is already thrashing and screaming - obscenities mixed with lunatic ravings, how he'll become "God of this world", that these idiots don't understand. Two officers grab his arms and pull him out from under the Lieutenant, restraining him. He's frothing at the mouth. You've found your perp. As they take him away, Kim, still kneeling, turns, looking almost as surprised as you.
— ...You sounded so sure.
I think the Shivers input here is more of of an Inland Empire one, but there's a lot to do with Shivers in this scenario with all the criminal deaths and broadcasts and so on
I wish we had a pure unadulterated Disco Elysium shitposting community
I think the detective's greatest success in this case would be to get Light sitting down on a chair somewhere, and then to run at him full tilt with both his middle fingers raised just before they collide. I can't think of a better plan, really.
get Light sitting down on a chair somewhere
The chair violates his backside and he dies from heart attack.
Shivers and Inland Empire just give you the solution to the case right off the bat and the entire game is actually about trying to convince Kim that we are for real dealing with a supernatural sequence killer.
