From a reddit thread where I dared to criticize Dolly Parton for her gross 5-9 Superbowl ad:

I totally see what you are saying. BUT, Dolly has done a lot of great things and promotes mostly good ideals.

The 5-9 ad was quite gross. But one could totally argue that it was stemming from her experience in the music field as a woman, where she had to work more than her colleagues. Totally not applicable to the majority of people, but that’s one look on it.

I don’t think she deserves to be cancelled at all. One can be criticized without being cancelled, and this “either/or” thinking is just so terrible.

Also, if you consider this sub or the mcelroys “performative liberalism” then you certainly don’t know what liberalism is. I would argue that mcelroys are progressive or social liberals.

Just because you identify as a leftist or whatnot, doesn’t mean everyone to the right of you is a liberal. I am a leftist, progressive, social democrat, whatever you want to describe it as. It doesn’t mean I go around picking fights, calling everyone else names trying to sound smart, and acting holier than thou.

Yeah, The McElroy brothers are the fucking vanguard of the left.

Words don't mean anything. The "stop teaching libs words" meme is true.

Aren't the McElroy brothers the literal definition of identity politics? And I don't mean that in the disparaging way, I mean that they are apolitical except on issues of identity. They're not justifying drone strikes or anything, they just don't talk about that kind of stuff. Which is their perogative, but it obviously doesn't make them leftists.

There's some other performative anti-capitalism sprinkled in there, and they explicitly told people to vote for Hillary and Joe Biden, but otherwise yes.

The left/right distinction is meant to determine if someone is pro- or anti-Capitalism. Saying “I’m as left as you an get without being a socialist” is another way of saying “I’m a right winger”

      see @CrispyFern's post below

Their fanbase is horrendous and incredibly embarrassing.

They're peak parasocial and interpret any and all criticism of their good good boys as a personal attack on them. This is the most apparent with the current arc of The Adventure Zone, which is so demonstrably bad, but you can't talk about it.

Thankfully a circlejerk subreddit got super popular in response where people do talk about how bad it is, but yeeeeeesh.
