I wish rats didn't live three years and die of cancer. They're such a good pet but at least with a dog I only have to go through that loss once every 10-20 years.
I would never go for another purebred dog, but my grandparents had a lhasa apso that lived about that long. If longevity was my main metric I could probably get one to live longer by feeding it better.

Yeah it sucks having to mentally prepare myself for their deaths pretty much as soon as I got em cuz their lives are so short.
It helps if you neuter them as soon as you get em; we did that with our current pair and they're 2.5 years old and completely cancer free so far
