When I was in school there was a study that said kids do better on tests when they've had a breakfast. Before our end-of-year exams they would give us a very cheap "healthy" cake donut and a carton of milk. These were the years leading up to and during 'no child left behind' so every school was really anal about test performance. Any other time of the year, however, you're on your own. So you can go a whole school year without having consistent breakfast and never learn anything but on test day you get a dessert and that's supposed to make you do well.

I think the mentality behind this was that your brain functions mostly on carbs so giving you a fuck ton of simple sugars right before a test would give you just enough to stay awake before the massive increase in blood sugar made you tired and hungry. Also America runs on extremely cheap processed garbage food (and Dunkin' ™️)

The school near me has been handing out food every other week since the pandemic started. It's cheap stuff like you'd expect but hell it's better than nothing and it really draws into focus the fact that our society could just hand out food all the time but chooses not to.

In 2013-2014 in my state at least, they switched to having a "smart period" which was a 30 minute unsupervised break after first period. They wheeled out snack carts with whole grain pop tarts, apples, and fruit cups with milk or Sunny-D as the drink.

After a while, they switched smart period to supervised and increased the amount of cops in the school though :/ then the cops started using smart period to search kids for drugs.

"Nice snack shop you've got there. It would be a shame if anything should happen to it."

That's why you move the stash house from time to time and never use your own locker. You hook some homies up with snacks to use some locker space. This becomes increasingly important if you're selling drugs instead.

I was in a very white suburban school and we still had 2-3 depending on the week. The ones closer to the city usually had a patrol car and 4-5 officers. Some have metal detectors at the entrance now.

They're there to "prevent school shootings" but in practice, they just harass and assault all the black kids and poor kids. Our SRO (School Resource Officer) broke a friend of mines ankle tackling him one day. Even the elementary schools have cops in them. They still harass the black kids there, but are even worse because they fuck with the parents too (your kid seems hungry, would be a shame if we called CPS on you and they found weed or something).

I was arrested by one when I lived across from a school, so they have some ability to fuck with people.
