    The thing is that while this is de facto what they believe, it doesn't look like that inside their own heads. They honestly believe that everyone who makes an effort should be rewarded — and then the magic fairy dust of the just world fallacy does the rest of the work for them.

    They have a dogmatic belief that the current capitalist system is fundamentally fair. Good deeds are rewarded and bad deeds are punished. It follows that if someone is getting bad results out of capitalism they have either committed sinful acts, like being "irresponsible" or "lazy" or they simply haven't tried hard enough.
