US Americans (lib, conservative, and apolitical alike) will talk about how the genocide of native americans was "regrettable", maybe even "kinda bad". But they won't go as far as to call the genocide and theft of the land "evil" or call the US or the settlers evil, because they will make all sorts of excuses about how it wasn't considered all that bad at the time and lots of other countries were doing colonialism then, etc etc. Or do what Blinken did in Alaska and talk about how that's all in the past now so it's irrelevant because reasons.

These are all very convenient positions to take now that the frontier is closed, the native populations have been fully subdued and their numbers decimated, and white Americans basically have everything they wanted. I am 100% certain that if this wasn't the case today - if there was still desirable land to grab from native inhabitants in 2021 - white Americans would find a way to rationalize away the continued theft and genocide.

I remember telling an american lib about residential schools and they handwaved it as "but that was way in the past". Once i brought up that the one that i grew up near closed in the early 90s, it was like hearing a laundry list of excuses. The fuckin gall of these people.

Yep. And if you suggest making real amends to native americans, anglos will find all sorts of excuses why we shouldn't do that ("that's just impractical!"). So essentially, Americans want forgiveness for the genocide and to move on, but they don't want to do what is the most essential component of forgiveness: making amends.

Its like listening to a swarm of bees when you bring up stuff like the sixties scoop, the ipperwash inquiry, the white paper, and the Oka crisis. It sucks, man.

America is only a successful Nazi Germany. We genocided nearly everyone here, took the land, and turned it over to capitalism. That level of "Primitive accumulation" gives your economy a hell of a boost and also helps solve your social problems for a while through free land. This country still has to reckon with it's foundation being built on slavery and genocide, hopefully that battle will lead to the destruction of America :amerikkka:

Yep, the thing about genocide is if you're good enough at it, you never actually pay the consequences.

while the US hasn't had any "real" consequences for destroying the native peoples (like anything that materially matters), I do think our insanely violent and disgustingly cruel past as contributed significantly to our psychotic culture now. Mass shootings everyday baby! :amerikkka-clap:
