Every three days on this site I see a "penises are shrinking due to microplastics" post. Before you call the volcel police on me, there are myriad other health reasons to avoid microplastics. So what can a normal person without much money do to reduce avoid microplastics?

Tbh seems like you need to either leave earth or stop eating and drinking to avoid microplastics, it's fucking terrifying

Like I just got a table top water filter for my faucet because our faucets will occasionally produce a 'shit smell', and the fucking filter housing and body are made of plastic!!!

Ordinary filters won’t remove PFAS chemicals anyway. For that you need something like a reverse osmosis filter, and those are kinda pricey in comparison.

Yeah I didn't mean I was gonna be able to totally avoid consuming plastic. I just meant like, consume less plastic, even if it's really only possible to cut down very slightly on consumption

I would imagine: avoid processed/ packaged food as much as possible, buy fruits and veggies for most of ur food, don’t buy bottled water, etc. I think I read that even stuff not in plastic containers ( stuff in cans, glass jars, etc, was contained/ traveled thru plastic, so I figure not a whole lot is free of micro plastics.

Filter your water if you can afford it I guess. Also don't buy food wrapped/packaged in plastic if that's an option. Use table salt instead of sea salt. Don't use plastic containers, rather use metal and glass containers for food and water. Since micro-plastics have even infiltrated the soil, grow your own food if you can.

Problem is that doing the following is completely unrealistic for 99% of people

most microplastics ingested are from sea salt and water. You can try to avoid the salt, not so much the water I guess

Don't eat fish, they're especially heavy in microplastics.

It probably depends on the fish. Fish higher up on the food chain like tuna concentrates more heavy metals like mercury as well.

OK, maybe I'm wrong, and drinking bottled water has a way worse effect.

Why can't all problems be solved by going vegan 😔

Wasn't the "shrinking penises" thing more of a genetic effect on newborns and shit? I don't think microplastics are actively shrinking adults' penises. But yeah, best you could do is try to eat/ drink stuff that isn't packaged in plastic. Even then, there's an accumulation of plastic in food simply from where it's grown or processed. Eating at a lower trophic level (plants, less or no meats) would give you less plastic overall because of less biomagnification*.

So essentially I can be the one-eyed king of the blind if I recycle all of my plastic into waterways?

i actually haven't fully read any of those posts. thats sort of what I thought? But microplastics still affect everyone's health, I was just wondering ways to reduce consumption

Oh god no. Filter the water or dig well in your backyard or collect and filter rain water or wait until your neighbor does these things and then kill your neighbor and take their nice things (assuming your neighbor is a democrat and/or republican).

Or are you saying don't drink straight tap water, filter it first

Store your food in glass or wax, especially for extended periods. Plastic chemicals will leech out of bottles and containers over time. It’s really the chemicals that will come off the plastics than anything else I think, it’s just the micro plastics have more surface area.

Same goes for clothing, avoid plastic fabrics as little bits will come off in the wash and also on your person.

Otherwise there’s not really a good way to avoid it individually.
