Threads was created with the specific purpose to be existential dread inducing nightmare fuel, a nuclear deterrent and a documentary all at once. I see it as the most horrific movie ever made. To a fault. It is so successful in achieving its goals it makes you question whether you can enjoy it. I admire its formal qualities and cinematic language, but every time I know I'm admiring the spectacle of human suffering.
I guess you can't separate that from "good" horror. Threads has both visceral horror and heaps of implicit philosophical horror. So yeah, watch it if you want to stare at the void.
Blender+Krita are a winning combination. Blender is superior to software with costs in the thousands of dollars, and FOSS to boot. You could go with 3D, 2D, an hybrid of both, generative art etc etc. Steep learning curve? Yeah it's animation, it was never not going to have a steep fucking learning curve. Don't let this stop you from exploring limitless possibilities- I wouldn't say its interface is any more clunky than the alternatives. And it's improving every day.
Can't go wrong with some Youtube Tutorials, trying to reverse engineer some grease pencil files, The Animator's Survival Kit, and some glorious Soviet animation for inspiration.

·4 years agothe ones you mention are the opposite of minimalist tho? gaudy and ugly in a very american way. in fact the xiii logo probably is the closest there to minimalism. its unhelpful call any corporate design you dont like minimalism (which is =/= lazy design)

·4 years agowhy in the mother of fuck has no one mentioned pom poko? obviously the best ghibli date movie. its about raccoons, fast paced, very obvious envoirmental message, gorgeous visuals, tragic but not soul shatteringly sad. perfect movie to watch cuddling up.

For real, HL2 aged like a fine wine. The god-tier art direction shapes my aesthetic sense to this day. But we gotta talk about those problematic faves sweaty 💅
One of the GOAT short films, period. Actually, categorizing it as a short film or animated film is condescending. It is great on its own merits.
