Kubrick must have been wired a little different than you and me. Making a movie that looks 100% like a renaissance painting is mental. Not mentioning that all lighting was natural. David Lynch as well. I long suspect that he experiences reality almost LSD like. And after seeing the Netflix documentary he produced about a broken brain I don't want to believe it's not like that.
Take solace in the fact that Kubrick made Cruise do 200 takes for most scenes. That's why his performance looks so tired and stilted.
Thank god for that. Kubrick's drive for accuracy might have gotten the better of him if that was in the script.
