Well, monsters checked morale as a group, not every single one. First when they took their first casualty and again when they lost more than half their number. If they passed both, they would fight to the death. Monster morale was usually 6-8 and passed on a roll of 2d6. Undead had morale 12.
But nobody ever bothered to check morale, unless the DM remembered it to save the party when a TPK was about to happen. Too much fun slaughtering monsters when the fight was already won.

I remember my brother had the first Android phone to ever come out. He was showing it off, and I was hmming and humphing. He showed how the camera flash worked and I allowed that that was a good idea instead of a strobe like a usual camera. He then showed me the flashlight app, which just turned on the flash and kept it on, turning it into a flashlight. "It's actually one of the more useful functions" he said.
Only first world people would even dream of saying something like this. 
Haha. We were stuck on an airplane on the tarmac heating up. 80 degrees, 85, 90. I had an accurate thermometer on me so I was the hero of the hour for having it. Especially Dad loved it, he just got angrier and angrier as we got hotter.
Until I pulled out my hand fans! I had mine, plus two more I had in my backpack. It was still hot, but a good hand fan does a great job in making it tolerable. We were the most comfortable people on that plane. Be prepared!

D&D used to have morale mechanics
Nobody used them. Monsters fought to the last man. Players really enjoyed that part of the game when the monsters were losing and yet fought on. The PCs felt in control of the situation. For many, this was the first time in their lives they felt this way.
This was supposed to happen in oldschool D&D all the time. Obviously, the players preferred to slaughter the enemies and the DM didn't know Gygax's poorly explained rules enough to implement it.
