/r/flashlights enthusiasts doing attacks on power substations to get a chance to use their flashlights
i wonder what happened with those power substation stories, did it ever come out who was doing it or did it just get buried
the original one was never explained as far as i know
just that it was very well organizedright wingers pissed trump lost, although as a larger trend it goes back to 2014.
Anti-civ anarchists were passing out zines on how to disable substations with a rifle back in the day. If I had to put money on it I'd guess those guys.
if the primmies could get their shit together enough to do a terrorism and also not release a manifesto taking credit for it i would be very surprised
Just move to South Africa, you can even get multiple power cuts a day! Multiple Flash light use opportunities
That fucking sub cost me a shit ton of money. But because of the lights I have now, I've rescued a dog that got out at night, and adverted collateral car accidents from an initial collision on a moonless night. A good flashlight is really valuable.
What flashlight should someone who can't be bothered to research anything buy?
Depends on your needs.
What do you intend to use it for? Do you need it to be small and light? Do you need it to be waterproof? Do you want built in charging? Do you want a "hot rod" that can be programmed and literally start fires, or just basic use?
If I could only choose one, I'd go with the Skillhunt H04 RC with the neutral tint high CRI emitter. It's a right angle light with a magnet in the tail and comes with a headband to use as a headlamp. Sightly programmable, plenty bright or dim, good battery life, built in charger and waterproof. It checks pretty much every box of practicality.
It's both parts dorky and endearing to see people getting so excited for getting to show off their hobby.
When I was younger there was a while where there were a lot of power outages for a couple hours. I wouldn't wish anything more than an hour of power down to anyone. The night sky was dope, tho
It does feel good when you're able to say "fear not, citizen, I have just the tool!"
Also before I started reading I thought that was a screenshot from a survival horror game.
Such a rush when you're finally able to help people with something you're prepared for that most people aren't. A huge storm hit the place I was living a few years back and took out power and data lines. It was so exciting to be able to help people clear downed trees out and restore services.
When there is no sense of community a chance to work together and help your neighbors is something to be cherished.
I'm just a nerd with way too much old retired telecom gear and a desire to help.
When I was in my teens I worked delivering newspapers early in the morning through densely populated areas, that is, big buildings with +6 floors. One day there was a massive blackout and all elevators were of course not working and I had to deliver a bunch of papers to some apartments in a building that had 10 floors, and of course, four of them lived in the very last floor. So I had to take the stairs, but it was all dark, so I got to pull out my phone's flashlight to see.
It was my moment, man. I perfectly understand this guy.
I remember my brother had the first Android phone to ever come out. He was showing it off, and I was hmming and humphing. He showed how the camera flash worked and I allowed that that was a good idea instead of a strobe like a usual camera. He then showed me the flashlight app, which just turned on the flash and kept it on, turning it into a flashlight. "It's actually one of the more useful functions" he said.
I went to a bachelor party at a cabin in the woods a few weeks back and everybody damn near lost their minds when we were starting a fire and I pulled out a headlamp and the blowker, which is a hybrid poker and bellows. If I'm going somewhere and there's a possibility that I will have to start a fire, those two things are always in my bag. I may not be a dad, but I have very powerful dad vibes.
i mean if you spend 100 pounds on some wierd iron stick and carry it all up the mountain those damn kids should better let you fucking use it !
Lol that was not the one I bought, mine is just a basic steel tube with a hook on one end. I think it was like $30. That one does look very nice, though.
anything that can be consumed will be turned into an identity to heighten consumption
Honestly power outages are cool vibes, at least when you can hang out with someone.
Only first world people would even dream of saying something like this.
i can see it both ways I guess. Power outages here mean you can stop working. They temporarily pause the rat race, make people more vulnerable and trusting. Makes people temporarily less into capitalist subjects and more helpful towards one another.
That's my experience at least
And this is predicated on the idea that power will return shortly. I can't imagine power outages happening frequently with no idea when they'll come back on. Also, losing power at a hospital sucks
I started with a handful of Convoy S2s from AliExpress, and spread out from there. The Wurkkos FC11 is the current one-good-flashlight recommendation by the flashlight sub. Arbitrary list of popular lights
YES DO IT. But they're not joking about the fires. And the UI takes time and effort to memorize.
Do you have a list of good red lights? I don't want to fuck up wildlife when I'm trompimg around at night
I use the skilhunt h03c rc when I need red, but it looks like it's discontinued.
Also, Hank from intl-outdoors has all the flashlights custom built for the purchaser, so you can just get anything in red. I like the Noctigon K9.3 with a warm main channel and a sst-20 deep red second channel. A few button clicks will toggle the light from white to red, and the deep red sst-20s are a super great red color.
So I live the dream everyday in South Africa when the power goes out? In fact, I'm living the dream right now!
Taking a pias in the dark at 2am? You guessed it, got to use my super powerful flashlight and blind/wake up the whole neighbourhood when I accidentally pointed this second sun out the bathroom window. 10/10 would do again.
I kinda dig it. I like it when people have kinda niche hobbies and get the opportunity to show of their stuff and/or knowledge about the subject. I also am jealous that I worked at a grocery store for 9 years and we maybe lost power twice and only for brief periods. I just wanted a day with no customers.
Posting on the flashlight subreddit is far cooler than posting on a politics forum tbh. I wish I could be one of them.
