  • What? I’m specifically saying that people shouldn’t be shooting cats and that I’m not agreeing with that argument.

you posted in support of an argument that is literally being used to justify shooting cats. in my neighborhood 4 cats were shot in this one thread alone, one by a shotgun. so why are you even bringing this up in this context if you're not for shooting cats? i don't understand.

Obviously shooting people’s pets is bad, I think we’re all in agreement here on that.

no, we're not. i had another user who also echoed your same argument DM me and explicitly say they are in support of shooting cats. here, i'll copy/paste the DM.

My position [...] is that just because cats have an instinct to torture other animals to death and get sad if they aren’t allowed to doesn’t give them any right to torture other animals to death, especially when them doing so is destroying ecosystems, and as a single cat, if left to its own devices, will torture an average of 390 mammals, 225 reptiles and 130 birds to death every year, it’s ridiculous to balk at killing them to stop that.

this is the company you're in, and the take you're defending for who knows what reason. if you want to have nuanced conversation about it, then fine, but in a thread where people's cats are being shot and your argument is being used as justification it comes off as in really poor taste at best and disingenuous at worst.

it's incredible to claim cats kill 700+ animals a year in a suburban environment (which is what nextdoor is) and then support the killing of people's pets for the sake of wildlife that is already subject to laws of nature and cycle of life. we've worked very hard as humans to extricate ourselves from the natural cycle of life and we afford a similar benefit to our pets but it's unrealistic to expect them to be fully domesticated out of their instincts and i stand by the fact that it's cruel to keep any animal caged indoors for any reason. is there a way to let out your cat without it being a destructive pest? absolutely. but if i let my cat outside and a neighbor with your beliefs sees it and grabs the shotgun, what a tragic misunderstanding that would be. i don't understand how this is even worth arguing over.

clearly i am being ratioed and it's disturbing as fuck for me to see that i'm surrounded by neighbors who will shoot cats and also on my favorite forum people are in support of it. and even those who say they're not, like you, still implicitly give ammo to those who want to shoot cats for whatever reason. i just cannot believe this whole conversation.

  • ok so your argument is all cats should live inside forever? and that's also not cruel? do you have a real solution to this issue of natural instinct? because locking an animal up for the perceived safety of some random other animals which may or may not be endangered by the locked up animal seems really cruel to me. obviously i dont encourage letting your cat out and saying 'go get em tiger!' but i'm not going to agree that keeping a cat inside all their life is humane. i've lived with over 20 cats and some like it inside all their lives, some hate it. these animals are from the outdoors and we brought them inside. seems really overly compassionate for some random birds and rabbits to then keep the pet you are responsible for in a state of perpetual misery. i'm sure we can strike a balance. cats can go outside sometimes, as a treat. if your cat brings back a bird every day maybe address it, but shooting cats is not okay and this argument that they are sport serial killers is the worst justification for shooting animals (which is the take you are supporting with this post, for the record).

  • honestly I think it's an inane and ridiculous argument on the face of it. the context was that my neighbors cat got shot and they posted about it and some guy came in saying that actually its ok to shoot cats because they are an 'invasive species' and it's 'animal abuse' to let them outside. so coming in and agreeing with that take is just bad form in my opinion because it's a wildly bad take to use to justify killing someones pet. it's a weird thing to care so much about when we are literally destroying entire ecosystems with roads, cars, homes, etc etc and we're gonna sit here and argue about a cat being let out sometimes and maybe killing a bird a few times a year. for the record, my cat has never killed another animal and enjoys going outside when possible because he lives in a tiny apartment. i would feel like a very terrible person keeping him in the apartment forever, he very clearly has a desire to be outside.

We generally think people shouldn’t be wandering around killing wild animals for fun, why shouldn’t we extend that to their pets as well?

because people abide by a set of rules created by other people? because animals operate on instinct? i guess you're suggesting either a) never letting a cat outside or b) walking it on a leash. i feel like maybe you just never have owned a cat or know how they operate? i feel like I'm being shoved into an argument where i'm defending cats eating birds and really i'm not even trying to do that, i'm just saying they are instinctual creatures and it's ridiculous to expect an owner to follow a cat around a neighborhood like they would a child. all i'm defending is NOT SHOOTING CATS and you're siding with the guy who wants to shoot cats. so yeah, i'm a little irritated by it frankly and here i am typing way too much in response.

anyway, i'll eat my ratio but i just think this is a ridiculous argument.

  • lol what do you mean 'letting a cat kill birds?' is it humane to keep animals indoors at all times? if it's not, then obviously they go outside sometimes and they are instinctual creatures. this is getting ridiculous. if someone's cat was killing a mass amount of birds and fucking up the ecosystem, okay, maybe a note on the door and talk is in order but what are you even arguing for? to agree with people who want to shoot cats because they might bring in a bird or two or some mice a few times a year? you know everybody has a right to exist in this world, right? i'm not gonna lock an animal up forever because of some ridiculous notion that my cat is a serial killer lmao

  • my nextdoor neighborhood just had a huge struggle session over this. hilarious how its always some chud man who comes in and says some dumb shit like 'its legal to shoot cats as long as the bullet doesnt leave your property' to everyone's shock and then there's a long subthread of chud bros jerking each other off about how its technically legal to shoot cats and you shouldn't let your cat out. oh and special shout out to dude who said its actually animal abuse to let your cat outside because they kill birds. nature is animal abuse ya'll.

Thanks for reading it all and giving your thoughts.

Yeah, I believe that gut health and anxiety are deeply related. It's not super easy to get a handle on, but I am trying for sure. I don't eat a lot of different foods and have a very restrictive diet with a strict supplement regime. It helps but I still get flare ups, especially on psychedelics, which I feel is just an indication of my health in that area, not a specific physical symptom in the moment.

I got an endoscopy and they told me they found nothing and even encouraged me to start eating foods that mess up my guts. They told me to eat more fiber which made the situation several magnitudes worse. I actually learned that significantly cutting fiber from my diet has helped a lot. I don't eat gluten or dairy either. I am a big proponent of kombucha but I got some gut testing done and they say I have a significant amount of bacterial overgrowth and gut dysbiosis so I need to be taking supplements and medicine for that, but I'm not the best at it because it's like 15 pills a day on top of my workout supplements, antidepressants and normal food intake. Kombucha also was advised against because it's apparently increasing yeast in my guts. Which sucks because it felt helpful.

Yeah, I have three therapists, lol. Medicaid covers as many as you need so I just went all out. They all specialize differently but yeah I do a lot of therapy.

I ate some mushrooms a few months ago and had a really positive afterglow and then some really tough shit in my life happened and it kinda got thrown to the wayside. Maybe another trip is in order.

Thanks for all your advice and just even engaging with me. I appreciate it a lot.

  • not sure i get the point of this comm.

is it to actually help people with dating advice from a leftist perspective? because if so, the comm is already a meme and whatever brave soul posts a legit non-shitpost thread first, god help them.

if it's just a meme comm, then okay, funny meme, now what?

    i guess i don't get it.
