Crazy how South America breaks hard left the moment the US stumbles into an economic downturn.

Almost as though there's some kind of relationship between America's ability to project power and Latin American politics.

Eh, we had our own mass of capitalists/agro-oligarchs/finance-ghouls/media-monopolists and idiots falling for them. The CIA always need the help of local traitors to do its thing.

i knew an extremely rich Peruvian gusano (a gf of a friend) and holy shit was she one of the most awful people. she would talk shit to random people all day, like quite literally just say mean shit to people for no reason. ABSOLUTELY LOVED to say stuff like, "my dad could buy and sell your ass you poor POS." I stopped hanging out with him for obvious reason, he even married her so she could get US residency and shit and after a few years he just couldn't take the verbal abuse. He worked a pretty high paying construction job too but apparently it was never enough for her because she came such a rich family. I really hated her lol

And many other crimes against humanity too. Also, she is currently being investigated for some corruption so she can't leave certain places of Perú.

So Ms. Fujimori, why are you running for president of Peru?

        Because I love this country!

It has nothing to with the fact you could get immunity from your corruption allegations?

Pfft, no, the thought never crossed my mind hahaha

Honestly I'm still burned from Ecuador and will only believe it when I see it. But pretty surreal to see the butcher Fujimori's daughter up against un Chulo Rojo. Can't think of a recent head-to-head election where there was such a sharp left/right divide between the candidates.

Yes, unironically those will be his exact words. See Vargas Llosa statemente about the election. VL is a lib (at best) who made his whole political career shitting on Fujimori, and now he says Perú should vote for Keiko, else the country is doooomed because of eeevil populism.

    Offtopic but, regarding the title:

Do latinos in the US talk like that? In english with an spanish noun every once in a while? I've always wondered that, is it genuine or is it showrunners saying "yep, this character is hispanic"?

To me it's "person pretending to pass as native spanish speaker but failing"

I've only heard gusanos talk like that, it's annoying. I've heard Latinos say a word in spanish if they can't figure it out in english and only among other bilinguals.

My old boss was a little old Venezuelan lady that only once referred to her leaving the country in the 80s because of 'las comunistas' and I never understood what she was on about nor forgave her

I don't know any Español (my expertise is strictly in Germanic languages) so I wrote communists as feminine because even if it's wrong, it should be feminine anyway

yea I never understood it. I know that she was here (in the UK) pre-98 because there are documents at work authored by her that go back to at least '93 as i recall.
i think she might have been referring to demonstrations, or rallies or something else - i have a vague recollection of some reference to student activism? i might be crossing my wires though 'cause communist-affiliated student groups existed in pretty much every country in the whole world

Two-round elections are weird, two parties that got less than 20% each get to be the two only options. Much better than the US or UK of course. And 18 candidates? It's cool though, and he has a real chance here with such a hated opponent

I'm a nerd who will never stop shilling for ranked choice, but two-round is at least better than FPTP.

of course the best system is

a proletarian democracy where the communist party is massive and vets candidates to keep out the bourgeoisie, class traitors, and foreign interference.

:100-com: with you on ranked choice. In my country it's a representative system where the parties form coalitions, negotiate to reach a majority and choose the prime minister after the elections. It's good but could definitely be improved with ranked choice, the parties need 4% to get representation at all and there's several parties close to that, would suck to have a vote go to waste. Also would let you vote communist first and the left party second :sicko-wistful:

Any peruanos here? Peru has compulsory voting but are the fines actually enforced? What's up with participation still only being 70%

Perucho here. Fines accrue and are tracked on some database. When you want to do some governmental tramite (paperwork), it will pop up on their system and they will not allow you to proceed until you have paid the fines. The fine for not voting is around 80 soles which is about $20.
