On this day in 1916, revolutionary Irish Republicans initiated the Easter Rising, proclaiming an Irish Republic independent of British rule and battling with the British Army for six days, killing nearly 500 people.

The rebellion was a collaboration of multiple militant Irish organizations, including the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizen Army (ICA), and Cumann na mBan, and an Irish women's paramilitary force. Notable leaders include schoolmaster and Irish language activist Patrick Pearse and socialist James Connolly, who served as head of the ICA.

Together, this coalition seized strategically important buildings in Dublin. Britain responded militarily, sending thousands of troops and artillery to clash with the Irish revolutionaries.

The resistance lasted six days before surrendering to the better equipped British Army, and artillery shelling and street fighting left many parts of Dublin in ruin. 3,500 people were captured, 1,800 of them sent to internment camps. 485 people were killed, and more than 2,600 were wounded. Pearse and Connolly, along with 14 others, were executed for their role in the rebellion.

The Rising was the first armed conflict of a revolutionary period of unrest that began in the early 20th century. In the "Proclamation of the Irish Republic", the revolutionaries linked their cause to centuries of struggle:

"We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extinguished except by the destruction of the Irish people.

In every generation the Irish people have asserted their right to national freedom and sovereignty; six times during the past three hundred years they have asserted it in arms. Standing on that fundamental right and again asserting it in arms in the face of the world, we hereby proclaim the Irish Republic as a Sovereign Independent State, and we pledge our lives and the lives of our comrades in arms to the cause of its freedom, of its welfare, and of its exaltation among the nations."

One of my former students of two years just died from gang violence and I’m numb. Like just shocked.

I just don’t know how to react or even feel or who to tell; or am even wondering if it’s worth bringing up to others. I dunno. Shits fucked.

"where is story?" i have to say, a lot of people have been asking me this question. no, really. a lot of people come up to me and they ask me.

they say, "where is story?" and i tell them look, we know what storytime is. we've had almost eight years of the best kind of storytime you can imagine. i just can not even believe it.

big story and little a story of the day and the weeks and the months. its amazing, its just amazing.

look, if you want to know what happens in the next story, do you want to know what the story is?

          i'll tell you.

first of all the story is a folktale, by the way I love the folktales. its probably my favorite type of story, the folktale, no it is my favorite. you know what though, its probably more like the fairytale, but with a lot of morals behind it. a lot.

if im being honest, i mean, im always being honest, i would never lie to you. i like a lot of morals. except for the eels, those moral-eels i saw at the big wet water zoo were something scary.

though, I probably shouldn't say that. im sure theyre a nice type of eel but theyre like, "aaaeeeee", on and on, like that. theyre shrieking eels! you know what i mean? always with the shrieking. i dont know. i mean, you know.

so, we have all these stories and we can read them together and read them when we're apart. multiple times even! did you know that? we can read them even after we read them, they don't tell you that, and i'll tell you, no one is better at the reading than me. you wouldn't believe it. that I can tell you.

so, we're gonna be the best on storytime, believe me. OK? alright.

we are gonna knock the hell out of storytime believe me, thank you, thank you, thank you.

My dog is polite. When I give her a bone she waits until I put a towel down for her before she eats it. I never taught her that she just respects furniture. :headpat:

You just install Latte dock, choose a theme and maybe add a widget or two and that's it really, speaking from experience. Plus plasma is very efficient and it's a great community. It's developed mostly by volunteers and people are allowed to easily contribute unlike with GNOME. It gives power and choice to the users if they want it but at the same time configuring it to your liking is pretty easy cuz you don't install extensions and the like. Also check this out.
