Cars have always been spiritually a rent thing, even if not explicitly legal so.

if you are one of the first Cybertruck owners

If you are one of the first cybertruck owners, the year is 2077 and you can just give one of the homeless kids on the ground floor of your arcology a soyplast boba tea so xir can hack the damn thing for you and disable the remote deactivation.

Seriously, this thing will only become viable for serial production once they invent nanomachine duct tape

I dunno the basic design would be very doable by other manufacturers. They just aren't that good at building cars. Other Teslas made in the US come with a ton of misaligned shit.

Using the possessive form of a pronoun as the singular? Guess pronoun technology will have advanced by then(I am not serious about grammar nitpicking here lol)

we shouldn't be doing the whole cars thing regardless, but i'd rather have better precedent for consumer protection and the way ferrari is about their brand and people customizing their own property i think it would be funnier if the precious and elitist fuckwads at the car companies had their noses and IP rubbed in some shit.

I'm never going to own one so I don't really care. Musk is a shit heel too but the reaction to this "news" gives him more credit then he deserves. This isn't his personal idiotic idea its just some dumb industry norm the corporate entity is following.

EU legislation is byzantine, but I wouldn't even a bet a ham sandwich against it being illegal in a huge chunk of the market

So they can sue you if you resell, but they don't have to buy it back if they don't want to. A prime example of anti-competitive behavior in effort to control competition in the secondary market and to manipulate market prices. They aren't even afraid of anti-trust lawsuits. I'm also guessing they anticipate this product is going to be a failure if they're willing to take such a risky position.

I imagine it's if the new owner contacts Tesla for a repair of some terribly designed part that came broke or breaks too easily, Tesla disables truck

It's, easy. Once it has burst into flames they will DNA test the charred remains inside and if it's not yours your loved ones are in big trouble.

    The remote disable is new.

A lot of “collector” cars have similar rules.

Cybertruck has more in common with a Lamborghini than a Hilux.

Lambo will blacklist you if you put a decal on there that they don't like, so Tesla's not at that level yet.
