Meanwhile I'm sitting here with my partner watching the One Piece Wano arc and we keep laughing at how THE MOST EVIL GUY IN THE WORLD has not misgendered his trans child even one time. Or any of the other trans people him or his gang is actively trying to kill. Nor has anyone in his pirate crew.

The most evil guy in the One Piece world isn't even a transphobe and doesn't have any obvious transphobes in his like 20k member large comically evil pirate crew. That's literally how easy it is to not be transphobic. And yet it's too hard for folks like this.

My partner and I have thought similarly, but it's honestly funnier to me and more convenient to my talking point around it if even the most evil guy in the world isn't a transphobe, so that's what I go with.

I smiled. Though I don't think Kaido ever expressed disdain for someone for their inheritance besides

        spoiler

        being the son of Oden

        Am I memory hole-ing something?

I cringed hard when okama were introduced, which gradually turned to confusion as a bunch of stuff was perfectly respectful towards their gender identity despite their horrendously caricatured appearances. Still not sure how much of it is Oda's political understanding expanding and how much of it was a point about the fear of trans people.

Yeah same. I think the only transphobic person and/or arc in the whole thing is when Saniji goes to okama Island or whatever but even then he ends up friends and with a clear deep respect for all of them.

I think One Piece isn't perfect but it's significantly more inclusive than most anime. It's probably top 5% or better

did you read a different manga? he leaves the island talking about how he was in hell after they tried to forcefem him for 2 years and is so traumatized by it that he has serious life threatening nosebleeds whenever he sees a "real woman" for a while. incredibly transphobic stuff.

honestly i think oda doesn't see any connection between okama and trans people. he supports trans people because he saw them in the news but also he thinks it's very funny when a man wears fishnets and traumatizes people by being so ugly

Honestly I must have just memory holed how bad that specific arc was. Sanji is overall the worst character / crew member so I don't really keep a lot of room in my brain for his story arc. Probably why I didn't remember how bad that was!
