shift attention away from the issue
stay woke, DSA https://interzine.org/2020/09/16/how-the-italian-american-dream-became-a-racial-nightmare/
I really dont get the whole being racist against Italians meme, can someone please explain it to me? They weren't considered "white" until the mid twentieth century, prior to that they were intensely racialized. Many were lynched. And on top of that, many of them brought radical leftist ideologies to America. In fact, that's where a lot of the anti-italianism comes from. Why would a leftist want to join in with that?
If you really feel like you need to use slurs against some race of people, at least pick one that doesn't have recent history of racial discrimination.
edit: didn't we have a thing about immutable characteristics in userunion literally one day ago?
Italians being "Treated like shit" is a massive exaggeration promoted by those reactionary, late-generation Americans trying to excuse their bigotry. Trust me, I grew up with this shit.
I'm as irony-poisoned as the next leftist, but I feel like "being racist but ironically" is kind of a bad look, at least if said systemic racism was less than a hundred years ago. Not gonna take it to /c/userunion or anything but I'm just not a huge fan
Subtweeting the entire site instead of calling out specific posters and reporting them to the mods is, in fact, the 12th form of liberalism :mao-wtf:
This is the most cryptic shit. Who are we talking about? Who is opposed to not saying slurs? Everyone in this thread agrees with your premise as far as I can tell, and I'd say the same is probably true for the entire site. Is there a specific slur you think people aren't acknowledging is as harmful as it really is? Is there a culture of hostility towards a specific group we need to reckon with? What's happening here? I'm so confused
And also, op: please call out a specific instance or two. It's not constructive at all to say "this site has a problem" and refuse to elaborate.
Locking this because there is going to be an inevitable "but what about..." which is a fucking pain to moderate through. Dont use slurs, if you're talking about yourself that's one thing (spoiler it though please) but otherwise hard no. Thanks.
I haven't ventured far from the front page of this site in the past week, are we dealing with an epidemic of slurs here at hexbear? I agree with the post, but I scrolled through 30 comments and can't figure out the catalyst
There was a meme yesterday about Europeans being racist to Romani people that included a slur, and so did a few of its comments. I assume that was the catalyst, unless there was another.
What I've done for the queer places I mod/help in is say that you can use it for yourself but not for other people or for the community as a group. So if you want to call yourself a slur I won't really stop you, but if you say "Us slurs deal with a lot of shit" or whatever then no, you're including other people now who don't want to be called that.
the queer places
not for other people or for the community as a group
:thinkin-lenin:
This so much. If anyone but my best friend calls me the "bundle of sticks/cigarette" slur, I'll whack them over the head with my walking stick. Seriously the amount of people that think that shit is acceptable to say is way too damn high.
