I was a lurker on the subreddit and discord, and I've been watching the modlogs, and it looks like you've been banning people based on their usernames when they make one post, if they were banned in the discord? What's the deal with that? were they chuds?

I have been. I'm slightly less sympathetic, but there were still quite a few that didn't seem to post anything bad but were still banned for either "wrecker shit" or "trolling" or "drama" or something on that line, and I think that that's a little bit sus

although I can't actually see the context on a lot of these, because there doesn't seem to be any way to go to a post a comment aws posted on

That could be improved I guess. It's a fine line between leaving content up and removing that content.

That's the issue though right? Should content that is removed for being a liability still be accessible? I think ultimately it's better to err on the side of things being a little less open than leaving things up.

There's two places where that problem requires hard censorship in my experience: CP and doxxing. That shit should never be left up. Otherwise the only issue I have with mod logs is that it results in people second-guessing dumb drama and other bullshit shit that's better left forgotten, so it generates a constant churning meta conversation that is mostly (but not always) unhelpful and which frequently quickens bad feelings. That's a problem that can be mitigated however, it just means more work for the mods, in the form of explaining the same thing over and over again to anyone who thinks something looks sketchy.

HOLY SHIT are you also Dear_Occupant on reddit?

Edit: also good post. I agree, but due to the eventual mod elections having transparent modding is important for that.

Oh holy shit. Someone told me that was the last post ever on the old sub before it got banned. I guess it must have been.

Well damn. Sincereposting wins the day I guess.

But on the subject of modlogs, there are a few really good reasons to censor them, and then a few other not-as-good-reasons, and then of course most of it is just really minor housekeeping type of stuff that is only interesting if you're deep into whatever meta is current. I think we should look at modding as unpaid labor and orient all our policies around that. There is a balance that has to be struck, but the catch is that if you trust the mods to censor some things, then that means you trust they are not censoring other things in the name of those first things. All representative administration relies on trust, I guess is what I'm getting at. Mutual trust, mind you. We need to feel like they are being open, but they also must not feel like they are being annoyed for petty reasons.

So do you have a link to where I can learn about the elections? I think I probably ought to get involved in that.

The stickied FAQ post has some information. Things have been moving fast to get this up and going but these discussions should start soon after the official launch happens.

Yeah I probably should have looked at that. Too eager to get back to shitposting. I've got like five effortposts drafted for the old sub that I was just waiting for the right moment to post when it got shut down, plus like everybody else I miss our old lessbad sub.
