If it's the latter, random memes and text conversations are easy to fake. There'd need to be like some photos that aren't anywhere online or other clearly identifying material for it to be verifiable.

Just don't like when the first stories are always right wing rags that are about as trustworthy as a sheet of 1 ply after a night of heavy drinking. If NYT is reporting on something they have absolutely no incentive to report on, it's usually a good sign that it's legitimate and there's something there.
